Hard guns to find right now.

I can find a 20" 45 70 or a CVA elite stalker 35 w 24" barrel.
After research the 35 is more versatile. I have talked with several people and get mixed reviews about recoil. Some say the 35 kicks less and some the 4570. ??
What is the boards review? The available 35 is about half price of the Encore 4570. I would be hunting whitetail in MS from about 100-150yards. Are they
legal now(I think I read they are but not sure) in LA?
As always much appreciated advice from the board!

Get a Limb-Saver recoil pad and don't worry about the recoil.

Thanks.
Does barrel length matter in the 35?

I've got an H&R 45-70 handi-rifle and love the compact length of it. I also bought an H&R handi-rifle 20GA rifled slug gun, same format, for Midwest gun hunting. I'm not nearly as confident with the 45-70 as I am with the 20GA.

I'm on the cusp of buying a CVA Scout in 35 Whelen and Luke very well part with my 45-70 if and when I do.

.45-70 is an old black powder cartridge that throws big arse chunks of lead slow as hell. It can be hand loaded to elephant gun power, but factory loads are weak. Still a deer killer and for shooting close it's pretty great. Will destroy less meat than the .35 at close range and will always exit if you use regular ol soft point bullets (stay away from Leverevolution)

.35 Whelen is what you get when you take a .30-06, stuff a bigger bullet in the end of it, pack some extra powder in it, and go find some big shite to kill. It's a full blown 300 yard badass elk caliber. Not necessary for 150 yard white tails but if you ever get the chance to elk hunt, you'll have enough gun in the safe.

Just bought the .35 Cva in 25" fluted barrel from Puglis I absolutely love the gun. Stainless with camo trim with cheek pad. .35 shoots like a 30-06. Push them 200-250 yards

Another vote for 35 Whelen. Like said above its a necked up 30-06. I shoot a 180gr Barnes TTSX from DOuble Tap. 3000+ fps at the muzzle. There's nothing "primitive" about it. Its quite lethal .

Here's a great article about the cartridge.

Id go 35.

I have a KP1 in 45-70 and like it a lot, but that was before 35 was legal. Its not easy on the shoulders either.

Got this in .35 Whelen for Christmas. Haven't shot it yet but it seems like it's very well built. Thompson Encore Pro Hunter frame, Bergara Barrel, and Boyd's stocks. Also got them to do a trigger job on it. It's very smooth and crisp. Got barrel and frame from Haus of Arms. [/img]

Proposed rule change or next year in Louisiana would allow the use of any firearm during primitive season on private land.

35 Whelen is the better choice. Mississippi basically allows any weapon on private land... no more primitive weapon, per se.

You won't notice the recoil when hunting, but you'll dread sighting in a new rifle and scope.

I shoot either the 35 or a 270 in deer season. I've never had to track a deer with the 35.

35 whelen without question. Just much more flexible. In fact, a lot of guys are just moving over to a 35 for all seasons. Just a great caliber

They are legal for primitive season in LA.

It's just a matter of time.

Why it's not just "$15 extra to use your gun two extra weeks" at this point is beyond me.

You can use a damn scoped .35 whelen right now.

Yeah primitive meant a lot more when it was basically 'cap and ball'. Now for most guys, it's just a good reason to buy a new rifle lol.

Yep, I still have my dads old Thompson Center Renegade 50 cal. I hunted with it back before scopes were allowed. Been toying with the idea of using it again. I do wish it was a 54 or a 58 though, just for the cool factor.
