What ammo do y'all recommend for .35 Whelen? Will just be used for whitetail. TIA.

Depends on the gun. My CVA likes federal premium bonded bearclaws in 225 grain. Little brothers H&R likes Remington 200gr. The hornadays shoot pretty well in either gun, and they're the easiest to find. Have heard good things about the 180gr loads but the maker is slipping my mind. Get with someone else who has one and try out a few in 3 shot groups.

Have a T/C Pro Hunter frame with a 24" Bergara Barrel.

I was leaning towards the 180gr Barnes but not set on them yet.

What has been your experience with the .35 Whelen on deer? Made a hunt with a group last year. All deer shot with the .35 ran off. Ones shot with a 45.70 fell in tracks. I have killed a dozen or so with my 45.70. All in tracks or within 5 yards. I like the idea of longer range capability with the .35. I limit my shots to less than 200 yards with the 45.70 now.

My encore didn't like the federals, had to switch to the cor loks because I couldn't find the barnes during season.

I love mine, its all I hunt with year-round beings all my shots are sub-200. 2 kills so far and the first one stopped in its tracks, second wasnt far from where it was shot.

We've had people have them run off after being shot on our lease as well. I think it comes down to bullet and shot placement

For me Barnes on a TC Pro Hunter. Hornady is pretty solid for less money. 35 leaves em in their tracks either way.

Whatever the gun shoots. Start with the cheap common stuff and if it doesn't like any of that work your way up.

.35 Whelen is a very capable elk caliber. Anything that your gun will shoot minute-of-deer will work. Stay away from the premium tough bullets geared towards elk.

I shoot Hornaday. I have CVA with stainless barrel. Never have lost one and have killed six or seven deer with it.

Not sure what to tell you, the farthest I've had one go is 20 yards, and between everyone I know maybe 3 out of 20 deer haven't bang flopped with the 35. Like downshift said you should avoid bonded bullets designed for elk cause they may pass through without much expansion, but I shoot bondeds and haven't had an issue.

I do not have one. That is why I am asking. Ballistics look great on the caliber. I am trying to decide if I want to switch from the 45.70. Thanks for the replies. As for the downvotes, I am not trashing the caliber.
