I am in the market for a used 2500 HD pickup, 10,000 dollar budget What make or model do you recommend? What engine or transmission combo would you recommend? The truck will be used a weekend warrior to tow an 24 foot car trailer Thanks

10,000 budget gets you a decent 6.0 2500 with 6 speed auto. Hammertime just got one. Page him and I'm sure he has all the info you need (price, mileage, etc.)

Got mine for 13 or 14k, I can't remember. Texas is stacked with them though. I drove through BR on the way to get mine.....right past two similar ones that we're listed for $17k and $19k
04 2500HD
4WD
6.0
100k
Crew Cab LT
Short bed
4.10s for the gas mileage
Had to do about $300 in maintenance, but went ahead and did a bunch of other stuff while I was doing it.
Look at:
Craigslist
Autotrader
Cars.com
Cargurus
You're probably gonna have to vary your search terms a little, because people's descriptions are sometimes screwey
Eta: To narrow your search, we're probably gonna need some more info like where you live, how heavy your trailer is, how heavy is the car you're towing, how often, how far, crew or regular cab, etc

That worked pretty quickly.

6.0 vortec with 4.10 gears. It will come with a 4L80e transmission which is bulletproof.
You're going to burn more gas than you thought possible but it will easily yank around that travel trailer and last forever doing it.
Don't get a diesel.

I have a 2014 Chevy 2500hd 4x4 with the 6.0 and 3.73 gears. It will pull my 32 Ft TT with no problem. You know its back there though. My tractor also tows fairly easy. I am getting 14.7-15.4 on the highway. I would buy it again

Had an 01 with a 6.0 and 3:73 gears if pulled everything up to about 9 or 10k just fine and got 10 mpg anything heavier it wanted no part of, sold it with 200k plus 8 months ago and in the last 5 years I probably put $3000 into replacing worn out parts, it was a great truck.

I get 10mpg unloaded, but going 85mph. My truck has a 52 gallon tank in it, so it is tolerable. The tank is adapted from a diesel 2500HD

Mine is at 219k hard miles and still pulls like a mule. I love it. The 6.0 vortecs are tough arse motors.
And those brakes
I have 4.10s and can get up to about 14.5 mpg if I baby it. Towing heavy is single digits all the time. The truck is made to pull. The suspension is great, the cooling system has no problem keeping up, the brakes are badass (I'm still on factory pads and rotors), the power is decent, and they last forever.
The 4 speed transmission is the only limiter. It's tough, but It has a hard time getting from 2nd to 3rd when loaded heavy. I haven't pulled anything with a gasser 6 speed but I imagine it's significantly better.

Only reason I got rid of mine is I didn't need a 3/4 ton anymore and I ran across a smoking deal on a 2014 1/2 ton so I sold it for a down payment. If I need to pull anything there is an 03 F350 with a 6.0 diesel and an 11 Dodge 3500 with a Cummins sitting in the barn

When I was in Kansas last summer 2500 with 6.0 vortecs with a flat bed were the popular choice of every rancher. Was a pretty big stamp of approval for me

I have a 05 Chevy 6.6 turbo diesel 4x4 with Allison trans. Paid $11,000 for it with 175,000 miles, I've put another 50,000 on it and haven't had any problems. Haven't found anything yet that it won't pull! Get 21 mpg unloaded and around 17-18 pulling camper, pontoon boat, tractor etc. You could give me $50,000 and I'd go buy this same truck, love everything about it!
Why the diesel hate guys?

I don't think its diesel hate as much as its price va necessity. I would have rather had a diesel but I couldn't justify the extra 10k dollars for it when the gas will pull anything I'll be hauling.

TT is 6800 dry I believe . The tractor and trailer combo with the cutter on it is right at 10k.

I'm wondering the same thing. Is it just price or is there something wrong with the newer Duramaxes?
Won't be long i'll be trading in my 2000 F150 4WD and my 2003 C2500 Duramax for a new one...

I have an 09 silverado 2500HD with the gas engine
at 250k miles now without a major repair and I drive it every day
as others have said it will pull anything
on mine, the trailer brake controller in the dash is really convenient and the 6 speed with the manual button makes climbing and descending so much easier

Nothing wrong at all with diesels. It sounds like he doesn't need one and if he doesn't want one, there are other options for him. The 6.0 will suit him just fine and cheaper than the 6.6. If he wants to splurg, get the 6.6.

Initial cost, operation cost, maintenance cost are typically not worth it for anyone who doesn't stay hooked up. You can buy a whole lot of gas for what the increased up front cost is for a diesel just to be able to get up the hill faster.
I know about 6 people who need a diesel and could legitimately justify the cost. Now if you just want one, that's different. Go ahead and get it. They're great. If you're only worried about what makes sense, a diesel rarely does these days.
