So after reading the thread either here or yhebOt about shutting off the engine while pumping, I got gas earlier today and didn't shut it off. Jumped back in the truck. The needle goes up but the distance to empty stays at 28. It's now at 3 even after the truck sat for a few hours off. Any ideas?

I drive a 2014 Tundra as well and can sadly confirm that's probably accurate.

Fuel gauge looks ok? Tried disconnecting the negative battery terminal for a few mins?

Found this:
You can also try resetting the ECU by disconnecting the battery, holding the brake for 15-20 seconds and then reconnecting the battery. I've noticed when you do that, the miles to empty goes back close to what it was when new.

To reset my fuel relay in my Toyota I had to turn the ignition on/off 3 or 4 times to reset. Maybe that will help? I know certain senors require distance more than time

I don't remember the last time I shut off a vehicle to fuel it up. That includes gasoline and diesel.

Why is it "dumb as hell". You have some actual evidence of something or just a position you've taken because of information you've read on the internet?

Looks like I am in the cool club as a owner of a 2014 Tundra and yes, you can be on full, leave the gas station, and still have only 28 miles till empty. Them Tundras love those gas stations.

I did this and then drove to BR. It fixed at some point along the way. So not sure if it was this or the distance thing. Thanks guys.

Haha. I got a new job a month ago and I think the biggest perk is the fuel card.

The Tundra will show empty and still have 4-5 gallons left.

I couldn't tell you since I ignore this feature.

When I bought my first Tundra that spec'd a 25 gallon tank.....and I drove it until it said one mile till empty then I put 19.5 gallons in it.

I love my Tundras (on my third now), but that's the stupidest nanny ever. Just tell me how many miles I ACTUALLY have before I run out! Don't tell me I'm out when I have 5 gallons in the tank.

For years now I reset the average MPG and trip my odometer.

doesn't it just seem dumb, from a common sense standpoint? There is combustion going on inside the engine, and you're supplying the fuel. Not saying anything will happen, but why chance it?

I'm no mechanic, but I would assume that any combustion going on in the engine has no way to reach back to the fuel tank. If it did, I wouldn't think having the gas cap on or off would necessarily matter.

Same here. I have a 38 gallon tank in my 2016, and when it says 2 miles left until empty I can manage to squeeze 31 gallons in if I talk sweet to the truck.

No I think the same thing. I don't think there is any likely way something would happen. I'm just saying, I'm not taking my chances.
