I'm in the market for a truck. A friend of mine owns a GMC dealership and he has been waiting on what I'm looking for. So, last week he takes in a 2012 F150 Ecoboost with 90,000 miles. He gave it to me to drive for a week to see if I like it. It's the year, price, and mileage I'm looking for. The truck looks perfect. Kept very clean, no scratches or dents.

There are two issues that I have questions about. One is that the Engine Overtemp light stays on about half the time. It looks like there are two temp gauges. One for the coolant and one for the "air"? The coolant light is fine. The engine doesn't appear to actually be running hot.

The other issue is that I can hear something that sounds like gurgling. Like a coffee pot percolating. Almost like it's coming from the dash.

Can anyone shed light on these issues? Thanks to all OB gear heads.

The Ford Ecoboost fanboys will be by shortly, but they seem to have issues around 100k miles. Also, that engine is pretty complex, so repair cost will be higher. I personally would never buy a turbo V6 in a truck. Save those for import cars.

Post photo of dash with the message on. Could be as simple as a temp sensor. If the message comes up and the operating engine temp gauge is still showing cold, could just be a sensor.

The other "air" gauge you are talking about is probably the trans temp gauge

Edit: Also, see if you can get any service records on it. Pretty sure the 11's-13's had an inter cooler update

Ecoboost fanboy here but I would be leery of buying that truck.

Is the price that good to make it attractive even with the problems?

I've had no issues with my ecoboost. It's a 14 with 55k miles and I pull a boat regularly. Papapogey has one and has a lot more miles with no issues.

I wouldn't buy it if it's having over heating issues. On the older ecoboost they had a timing chain rattle I know that was an issue.

I've had no issues with my ecoboost either. Mine is a 14' with 70K miles and I pull a boat often.

~110k on my 13. Just changed my spark plugs. Runs like a champ

OP, I wouldn't mess with any truck that says it's constantly over heating. I read a lot of ford forums and haven't heard that specific to the Ecoboost.

i have a 2011 ecoboost lariat at 112K miles
no idea about the issues with the truck in question but here are my thoughts:

1) gas mileage sucks...13- 15 mpg best
2) it pulls my boat far better than my old chevy 2500HD 6.0
3) its much more fun to drive than the chevy
4) i have had constant transmission issue, whether that is a common issue i dont know

i never "miss" the V8, but i sure wish it did better on gas

that is the sound of air flowing with coolant through your heater core. The coolant system is low. A pressure check is required to find out where the leak is. Take it to a service center to have them run a coolant pressure test.

I hear the first generation ecoboost had issues with carbon buildup. It has been addressed at this point but i would pass on the 11'-13' year models. Just me.

Temp issue, no idea.

Gurgling, possibly intercooler which is an easy fix.

My Ecoboost only lasted 4k miles. It began running like crap. 4' of flood water might have been the issue though.

What issue is that?

I have a 12 f150 but it has the 5.0 in it. I would get that light issue checked out before buying it. Could be a sensor...could be a mouse chewed through the wires and its shorting. I know someone that had a brand new bmw that had a mouse chew it up....11K worth of re wiring that insurance did not cover. You just dont know. Maybe thats why it got traded in? The EB is a solid performer no matter what anyone says...but the first few years of them had there growing pains.

Might have to go visit your friends at the shop in denham again. The front end work they did to my truck seems to be having issues. I'm looking forward to seeing ol girl at the front desk again. I hope they would fix anything not done right the first time, but something tells me that may not happen. If not, I'll probably tell her she sucks and leave.

I don't trust an ecoboost as far as I could throw it, no way, no how.

Would prevent me from buying this truck.

ecoboost air cooler system is a closed loop system not tied to the engines coolant supply

Let me guess, you drive a Chevy. I pull a 4k lb generator every single day for the last 3 and half months. This motor is a work horse.
