2003 Chevy 1500HD Bad Water Pump
Posted on 2/23/17 at 8:54 am
Posted on 2/23/17 at 8:54 am
Had my water pumped and thermostat changed 5/2016. Notice yesterday I am leaking coolant again. It seems to be in the same area as last time. Do water pumps go bad that quickly? Dropped $430 10 months ago.
Thanks
Thanks

If its leaking around the pump, its more than likely just the seal.

How easy could I address this issue myself? On a scale of 1-10, I am a 2-3 when it comes to mechanical stuff.

Its not too bad really, I've done water pumps on my dodge and a few fords but not a chevy. Usually you have to remove the fan, fan shroud, remove the belt, disconnect all the hoses that are on the pump. Then you can unbolt the water pump.
check out a1auto.com they usually have solid how to videos on there site or just google it and there should be some videos.
On a scale I would say 5 maybe, its not hard just a lot of stuff to remove to get to it.

sounds like you're coolant system is experiencing electrolysis.
Dexcool plus tap water = yearly water pump, intake manifold gasket and sometimes head gasket and heater core replacements.
You need to completely flush out the system with distilled water(can be bought for .88 a gallon at Walmart).
Once it's all flushed out of the motor then you add in a 50/50 mixture of green antifreeze and distilled water.
Never put anything besides antifreeze or distilled water in the system again.

On a scale of 1-10, it's probably a 5 if you don't know what you're doing, a 2 if you do. It's only like 5 bolts holding it on. Two are hard to get to because you can't see them

Have never put tap water. Only use the premix dexcool. It was flushed in 5/2016 when water pump was replaced. Had not added anything until last night when I saw it was leaking again. Is there any chance its just the seal and not another $400+ job?

quote:the only seal in a water pump is the front bearing seal. There is a gasket behind the pump where it mates to the engine. Is this a 6.0l v-8?

Yes.
So is it possible its just the gasket? I cant imagine a damn water pump only lasting 10 months. It never lost a drop in the container since 5/2016 until the last couple days.

quote:highly unlikely. There is a weep hone on the bottom of the pump. Get you a small mirror and hold it under the waterpump and see if the coolant is coming from this hole. If so then the bearing has gone bad and the seal can no longer hold the coolant back.

Is that common to go out so quick? Looks like a new damn water pump after only 10 months. What a shite show. Do these manufacturers not back their products? I know its not the mechanics fault.

quote:no, not really. The metal gaskets are known to go bad as well but i wouldn't think they would be unless the bolts backed out

Depends on the pump, how it was installed and the condition of your coolant system. I've had aftermarket pumps fail in a year with everything else being fine. I use OEM pumps now, never had a problem with them. I switched my trucks over to Rotella ELC a few years ago, red stuff, and have had zero issues with it. The HOAT chemistry it uses will last a very long time.

Its not very hard at all. I had an 03 Avalanche. Hardest part is getting the cooling fan off. You need a large open end wrench and you need to need to hit the wrench very sharply to the left to loosen. Once that's off, just a few remove a few bolts and the serpentine belt to take off. Good time to replace the serpentine belt and the A/C belt if they are separate.

Sometimes you can get the gaskets on kinda crooked if you don't pay attention or use gasket maker to hold them on. The rubber might not be in that little cutout all of the way around the pump

not saying it is, but chevys around the year of yours had defective plastic intake manifold gaskets that dry out and crack.
mine had a water leak that looked like it was coming from the water pump but it was leaking from the front of the manifold behind the water pump.
if coolant is leaking from running down the block and not from the little drain hole under the water pump, then its not the water pump leaking.
cost me around $800 to get that gasket replaced because damn near "everything" has to come off to do it.
its a 100% certainty that if you haven't had it replaced yet you WILL have a leak issue with it because they perish with age and there is nothing you can do to prevent it but using the less corrosive coolant helps extend its lifespan.
just about any GM vehicle from 99-05 will have these trashy garbage intake manifold gaskets. my nieces Malibu overheated and cracked the block because hers blew out and ran out of water on the interstate. by the time the idiot lights went off and she pulled over, the block had cracked from overheating

Several water pumps have lifetime warranties. I am sure yours has at least a year warranty.
Posted on 2/23/17 at 7:51 pm to ThatsAFactJack
Call the shop...it is probably under warranty if less than a year.
you never know until you try.

Bring it back to where you had it changed and get them to parts replacement warranty that pump, (it should have some kind of warranty on it)even if you have to repay labor it could save you a couple hundred.

Never ever under any circumstances buy a rebuilt water pump, always buy a new pump. Did I say never ever buy a rebuilt pump?
