1992 Honda Fourtrax 300

An older guy from my dad's deer camp is looking sell his 1992 fourtrax 300 for $1,500. I know the 4wheeler has been taken care of, hasn't been put through hell and is a Honda, but it's nearly 25 years old. Is this a deal or no? Thanks for the input.

4x4? They're built like tanks and hold value pretty well. It's getting tough to find one that a kid hasn't thrown a snorkel and a gear reduction on so if it's well cared for it's definitely worth it. Check the rear diff as the seals are prone to leaking and letting water in. Also, the brakes are usually complete garbage. They make a disc brake kit for ~$300.

Depends on the condition. Since it's a 92, it's probably in good or decent condition. In good condition, I wouldn't consider it a "deal" but it's not a bad price. The good thing about those bikes is they were built like tanks and the parts are easy to find. So even if the plastics aren't that good, you can order new ones. As well as other parts you may need. I'd try to talk him down a little though and you'll have a good bike for years to come if you take care of it.

He apparently just had the bike serviced so I'm assuming everything on it is good. I'm not sure yet if it is 4x4 or not. I know it doesn't have a snorkel or anything like that. This guy is in his sixties, bought it new and has only used it as a deer camp 4wheeler. I'm in the process of getting more info on it. Thanks for the input.

I'd say it's a deal. My dad has the same 4 wheeler. All he has ever had to do is change the oil. It even has the original tires on it and they look good.

I'm still rolling in my 88 model fourtrax 300. You can't hardly break those things. Built very well

My '96 has been bulletproof. If it looks new I'd pay $1500 for it without a 2nd thought.

If 4x4 best bike made
Look over rear chunk for cracks
If that bike floats your boat they are strong running. Won't have front disc but if the front & rear drums work that's a bonus.

This^ ... if it's a 4 wheel drive version it's the best, most durable 4wheeler I've ever seen or owned. I had an 88' and still have a 98' that has been through hell and back (and I do mean hell) and still runs like a top. Check the breaks, though, they're notoriously shitty and wear out very easily. Also check the rear axle and gears, they will sometimes wear out if it's been driven really hard, but if it's an old man just cruising around the deer camp I would doubt this would be an issue.
I'd say $1000ish is a fair price for both parties.

I'm still rolling on a 1990 Fourtrax 4x4 with brakes
One of the best mods I have done is adding a switch on the handlebars to bypass the neutral safety switch. Push the button and start it in any gear. I sometimes have to rock it back and forth to get it out of reverse. If by chance I was not able to get it out of reverse. I can still crank it and back it home
I got a PDF of the 88-94 Service Manual free online. Could probably find it online if you need one or I could email a copy.

If you have a Honda with a rear drum brakes, I'll give you a pro tip.
Drill and tap the drum for a grease fitting whenever you replace the rear bearings and seals.
Djust the rear brakes to where the engage, and then completely fill the rear drum with grease. The brakes will still work fine.
The catch is the water will not be held in the drum and destroy the right side seal which will wipe out the whole diff.
Do this and a set of bearings and brakes will last 15 years.
