I know the .17 hmr is violent on meat.
That's what I was wondering. I'm looking for something for small game in Alaska with a range longer than a .22LR but nothing that will evaporate the meat.

And while I'm positive it will take out a deer, I'm going to get a .223 for my daughter.
Most people on this board would not believe how many deer I've taken with .223.

17 is not bad AT ALL on meat. shoot the right ammo. Shoot the 20grain hollow point. dont shoot those 17 grain ballisc tips when you hunt "unless you like the carnage"

Oh yeah? That coming from a guy who drives this...

(sorry, I just HAD to work that in at least one more time!)

I'm told by locals up there that most of the small game in Alaska could easily be taken with a .22LR IF you can get close enough to them. There's also the issue of wind, which apparently the .17 WSM handles like a boss. If the ammo is cheaper than other .17 calibers and .22 Mag, then this new .17 WSM may fill an actual need.

I'm looking at grouse (basically an arctic prairie chicken), ptarmigan, hares.

When I was up there the last few months, I did some scouting around and stalking. In brushy areas, a .22LR or .410 will work great.

In the flat open alpine and tundra type areas, I had hell getting in easy .22 LR range (considering winds). That's why I think I may need another solution.

In all seriousness, do you think .17 would do less damage to the meat than .223 FMJ?

Ammo costs about the same, and I already have a .223.

I just have zero knowledge of these 17's.

Coastie,
I don't have a 17 WSM, but I MIGHT get one later. Having said that I think the 17 WSM should be much better than the 223 Rem/5.56 in 2 situations:
1. Ground squirrel hunting (technically "Belding Ground Squirrels) at moderate ranges, i.e. 100-200 yds. At these ranges, one doesn't need the extra power and noise of the 223. At these ranges, it should also shoot flatter than the 17 HMR and the 17 Mach 2.
2. Close range prairie dog hunting (i.e 100-200 yards), as long as it's NOT windy, for same reasons as above.

Granted, that's a pretty limited niche, but since when does a caliber (especially a new one) have to be better than a different (older) caliber in order for us to buy it?!

W/ the "available" bullets at this point, I can't imagine the 17 WSM not being very destructive on all small game.

way i see it the 223 will do the job. IF.....IF you dont wana spend the money on a new rifle. if not then no need to get the 17wsm, but personally im always looking for an excuse for a new rifle

it will.. its just the new chick on the block right now.. and everyone wants to try her. More companies will start making the ammo too. Like i said in the other thread i went in bass pro in knoxville,tn last week 2 diff days and both times they had 20-30 boxes on the shelf. But no guns

Josey and I went to the range this afternoon to sight in our 17 WSM. We started off at 25 yds to get it on center then moved the target out to 50 yds. We were running out of time at the range so we didn't get to try it at 100 yds. After several rounds the gun started to heat up and pushed a few left. From what I can tell it looks like it will do just fine on the varmints.

This was at 25 yds

At 50 yds

I'm not gonna be interested in getting one until ammo becomes readily available for it.

I've got a .17 hmr, .17 Mach 2, a .204, a .22-250, several .223, and a plethora of
.22s.
