There is a no fly zone over the oil slick to keep the media out, and we are suppose to think the feds and BP aren't in bed. Wake up, only the FAA can declare this. we have not had one media helicopter taking video of this disaster. They do not want us knowing how bad this really is, and the feds are in on it. Obama needs to nut up.. its BP's fault sure but it is time for some leadership. obama is a joke

They are probably doing it for safety. They have helicopters involved in the relief effort and also had those low flying planes droppings dispersants.

How would you explain not letting boats down river. Especially with media folks on em.

This would probably have more to do with media censorship than anything.

They want to control as much information as possible.

The no-fly zone makes a little sense in that if they are piloting AC 130's at low altitudes dropping dispersants the pilots don't want to have to be avoiding a lot of other air traffic out there.

BP enacted this 3 weeks ago. It was to censor media.

I would imagine this pilot had to change his underwear shortly after landing.

The pilot of a twin-engine Beechcraft being used to apply dispersant on the Gulf oil spill got a jolt Friday afternoon as he approached the Mississippi coast and a couple of F-15 fighter jets swooped alongside him.

I really don't understand why any of you are reading into this all that much??

Common sense tells you that there is a chaotic amount of shite going on around that area and there is ALOT of helicopter and plane traffic already.... So why would you allow every Tom, Dick & Harry out there to go buzz around and inflame the situation and get in the way??

Anyone with any brains should know how bad this is. The 24hr news cyle is doing a good job of letting everyone know how bad this is.

Especially if he didn't know his transponder was broke.

I don't think most people understand how crowded/busy it is in the MC 252 (well site) area. They have 4 huge drilling rigs (with a few yes few more on the way), several huge ROV support vessels, a number of service vessels, a couple huge tranker/production vessels on the way, and a VERY high amount of air traffic.

If every swinging dick with a boat/helicopter/plane was allowed in there then it would be a SAFETY/LOGISTICAL NIGHTMARE bc you know the media has no regard for whats going on. They just want to "break the story". This is NOT a ploy to keep the media out. This is to allow the job at hand to get completed safely and as quick as possible.

The no fly zone doesn't bother me. Its only 3k. You can see what you need to from there if you are the media. The less sh!t they have to worry about fixing this, the better.

I could imagine choppers all over the rigs without the no fly zone.

Direct from someone that was on site for 3 days =
Gruesome. Much worse than the public knows. No cameras or pictures allowed.

From Houma, scores of people and boats sitting around doing nothing.

I can understand no fly zone over the site. However I talked to a couple media photographers and they told me weeks ago they were no longer to fly within 3,000 feet of the wetlands. They said this was due to keep media from getting fairly good resolution pictures of an oily marsh.

The media is fricking stupid. It's a Temporary Flight Restriction and they're issued all the time for various reasons, one being to keep non-participating aircraft away from disaster areas.
It's regulatory and if you bust one your gonna be hating life.

quote:

While not an exhaustive list, a TFR may be issued for the following reasons: toxic gas leaks or spills; fumes from flammable agents which, if fanned by rotor or propeller wash, could endanger persons or property on the surface or in other aircraft; volcanic eruptions that could endanger airborne aircraft and occupants; hijacking incidents that may endanger persons or property on the surface, or airborne aircraft and occupants; aircraft accident/incident sites; aviation or ground resources engaged in wildfire suppression; aircraft relief activities following a disaster; aerial demonstrations or major sporting events; or reasons of national security.
