Zachary lab owner faces Medicare, Medicaid fraud charges

The owner of a Zachary medical diagnostic lab ordered unnecessary drug testing of urine samples for almost a decade, defrauding Medicare and Medicaid of more than $148 million, federal prosecutors said.
Among the things he spent his gains on: the renovation of his pool and pool house and the restoration of a truck, according to a U.S. Department of Justice news release issued Friday.
Brad Paul Schaeffer, 48, was a co-owner and CEO of MedComp Sciences in Zachary. Between January 2013 and August 2022, the company billed Medicare and Medicaid for the testing of 15 substances in all urine samples it received, regardless of the patient's medical history or what their medical providers had ordered, prosecutors said.

How many drug tests does this add up to? Holy shite! I know the lab I use charges $60 per 9-panel. Even at $500/test, this guy "did" 296,000 tests over a decade, or nearly 30,000 per year, or 2500 per month.

I wonder who he pissed off.
Maybe our medical insurance will drop.

I’m curious in this math as well. How much does Medicare/Medicaid pay per drug test and how much of that is profit for this lab?
A renovating pool and pool house and restoring an old truck isn’t exactly lavish spending, either

Original Medicare is an absolute joke. A complete waste of money unless you're one of the thousands of physicians, facilities or systems that abuse, fraud or overuse it to the tune of $100+ billion each year.

$150 million and that's the highlight of what he spent it on?

Not sure but there was a "whistleblower" who turned them in for a kickback scheme where they were working with doctors across the nation. Below is the video/article from 4 years ago. I am assuming he did not "make it right" to the powers that be during that investigation and now they are in more trouble.

He billed the 22+ target code, not the 9 or 12.
That bills $296 plus the collection and some other LC/GC MS codes that can bundle up to about ~$400. About 3-3,200 urines a month.
Eta: your 9 panel is a screen, which bills for $35. The way you crank the billing up is by performing a confirmation through LC/GC MS. We were running 1,000 a month.

Health Care provides that defraud Medicare and Medicaid should be tossed in prison for LOOOOOONNNNNNGGGG sentences and non-violent drug offenders released. The damage done to society by the former is far greater than that done by the latter. The problem is there probably wouldn't be but about 5% of providers left in the country....the other 95% would be in jail.

drug testing of urine samples
To my limited knowledge the lab test is required prior to writing the scripts.

What about the people that abuse it?

They apparently test you whenever you come in, nominally because if you are on pain meds they want to see the levels coming back out of you.
Too high is bad because it is abuse. But too low and they accuse you of selling your meds.

This is most likely what is happening. One of my clients is under a federal CMS fraud investigation. They were given two clear warnings from the feds and the AD's office before federal agents showed up in the navy windbreakers.
This guy on the other hand...pigs get fed; hogs get slaughtered

Of course they should be treated the same way...but very few people are in a position to abuse it like health care providers can.
My father, in my opinion, abuses it...he gets shoes for "free" because he is diabetic. He can afford the damn things and when he gets them he doesn't wear them and winds up giving them away...but by god he is entitled to them so he is going to get them. His doctor that orders them knows this...I have told him, my wife has told him, and the Doctor's take is that he is entitled why not get them. I have managed to get him to go to 3 different doctors thinking one of them would have the integrity to tell him no...none have yet, and for one reason. They are getting paid to see him. They are a bunch of crooks, the lot of them, and they can claim to see hundreds of people like my dad a week when only 40-50 could possibly actually show up....

Might be a little over the top, even for the ballers of the OT.
