Yup! According to Lincoln there was no way to ship them back to Africa if they were personal property.

Lincoln was definitely mulling shipping all the slaves back to Africa, mostly to Liberia.

By bringing slavery to the forefront of the war, he said he would do anything to win.

Read the Emancipation Proclamation and you will find it stated slavery was still legal in certain areas controlled by the Union.

fricking this. In fact, it should be:
Young Jefferson
Adult Jefferson
Old Jefferson

His corpse is better than some of the people in these lists.

re: Your Top 3 Americans In History
Lincoln technically should have been impeached. He was basically a tyrant during the war. I respected him until I really started digging into his politics, especially during the war. I agreed with his general social dialogue however.

I truly dislike Hamilton, being that he was the designer of the national bank. Jackson was right to veto the renewal of the charter. Being also one who firmly believes in strong states rights I tend to be very anti-federalist, as it were. I could go deeper, but I wont.

18th Century
1) Madison
2) Jefferson
3) Paine

19th Century
1) Jackson
2) Twain
3) Bell

20th Century
1) Eisenhower
2) Robert H Goddard/Wright Brothers
3) GW Carver/Norman Borlaug

Sticking to 3 is all but impossible.

re: Your Top 3 Americans In History
3 underrateds

1. Horace Mann: Mass public Ed led to a rapid acceleration of American innovation

2. Thomas Paine: He is THE radical and revolutionary of his time.

3. Teddy Roosevelt

-created the national park system
-led the Rough Riders in the Spanish American War
- gave the White House its name
- broke up trusts
- was 'cool' before anybody heard of the concept of 'cool.'
