i imagine most of us that aren't millennials (no offense intended) remember this as our first cell phone.

I think the Nokia 5XXX were millennials' first phones too, at least older millennials.

They didn't have 1/100,000 the processing power and stuff that today's phones do

In school if we wanted to make a phone call we took a quarter, went to the pay phone, put quarter in, and dialed the number

In middle school it was 1-800-CALLATT and when they asked for a name, I'd say "mom it's me, I'm at the "Blockbuster Music" store. Come get me." And hang up.

Good times

Did anyone have one of these?

It was a popular college graduation gift around the time my age group were graduating. It was more of a headache than anything.

Absolutely. I got one of those as a present for finishing grad school. I planned on using it in the "real world" and brought it with me to work every day along with my Razr....I barely used that fricker. Such a waste of money.

If I can recall, these were the pre-smartphone era phones I had:

Nokia 5110: first I had a basic black, then got a red one

Ericsson t60: had a red one but I wanted mainly because you could create your own midi file ringtones on it

Motorolla Razr: such a good device

Which reminds me of the pros and cons of cell phones

Pros: Without previous plans, you can set up plans with your friends spontaneously

Cons: If you plan to meet in advance, your friends can drop out without much notice. Before widespread cell usage, you pretty much had to show up or people thought you were dead.

This was my first. The camera sucked arse but it had a cool little ringtone maker and a mini golf game I used to love playing.

"Mom, I'm on the phone!" and also not being able to use the internet at home and be on the phone at the same time

And scrambled Spice channel unless you went to your uncle's house who had the box with a chip that he only hooked up for boxing fights

i think that would lead to a debate about what the millennial age cutoff is. i in no way identify with them and i graduated in '02.

some would call that millennial, and i would kick them in the balls.

Millennial = had a cell phone before high school

That doesn't include a bag phone, built in car phone from your parent's car, or the one that comes in a Benz

I had this bad boy, too. And I had different face plates to match whatever shirt I was wearing that day.

I remember the interchangeable face plates and song ringtones were a big freaking deal.

Nowadays, the only people I know with a song as their ringtone err on the trashy side of things.

i think that's a bad cutoff. my kid won't have one before they are 16. but they're totally millenials.

i say if you don't remember VHS or laser disks, life without a cell phone... you're a millennial.
