Highly recommend swimming. I've got a bigger friend that has knee problems so he was looking for a solution. I offered to teach him how to swim and after a month, he's in a MUCH happier place. Cutting weight, no knee pain, got rid of his farmer's tan. Started off at 1 hour for 400m a month ago and now he's at 2000m for 1 hour. Pretty proud of him and myself

I feel your pain, 6-1, was up to 335 - yep let myself get a "little" out of shape! Diet started Aug 30, 2013 now at 265 and still working on it. Bought a bike and started riding about 2 months ago. My heart dr said i was good, but if I didn't lose weight, we'd be seeing each other again. He gave me this diet. Breakfast: (usually I just make a ham and cheese omelet, maybe add a little spinach to it) 1 or 2 eggs 2 slices of bacon, ham, or sausage coffee or tea, no sugar Snack: 1/4 cup nuts, no sugar no calorie drink Lunch: large green salad (lettuce or spinach), no carb dressing, 5 olives, and turkey, chicken beef, cheese, or tuna Snack: 1/4 cup nuts Supper: Fish, Pork, Beef or Poultry, up to 10 oz., no sauce small salad, broccoli, asparagus, or green beans NO: fruit or fruit juice ketchup bread rice potatoes chips corn pasta desserts ice cream carrots, beets, turnips

Curious, why no Carrots or Turnips but Green Beans and Broccoli? They all have around the same cals per 50 grams and Turnips/Carrots have allot more Vitamins/Minerals than Green Beans.

Ive lost nearly 100 lbs doing low carb dieting combined with jogging. I'm 6'2", was 337 - now 245. It works, just take it easy on the red meat and completely eliminate bread, rice, beer, etc.

For long term success, keep it simple. Shop on the perimeter of the grocery store (fruits/veggies/lean meats) and avoid the center isles.

I'm not a big fan of long cardio sessions in the gym (stairclimber/treadmill/bike). Long walks, swimming are good, or some HIIT stuff like burpees, jumping ripe, sprints.

A typical backyard pool is pretty tough for fitness swimming. Two or three strokes and it's time to turn around-and most of your momentum comes from pushing off the side. You'd be better off joining a club that has a regulation pool with lanes.

I am an x-offensive lineman - good to hear from you brother. FOOL (Fraternal Order of Offensive Lineman).

You should call Joe Ostaszewski who played for Florida State in the late 80"s early 90's. He was on the biggest loser a season ago and lost a ton of weight. He will be able to relate to you as a former elite athlete. He will give you his phone number. Great guy

I've always wondered if it's better to try and keep a high heart rate going (140-155bpm) versus low impact with intermittent sprints.

Trying to lose weight and currently just treadmill and stair step with high bpm. It's painful. If low is better, I'm all for it.

In all seriousness, if you want to avoid major heart disease and an early end, you need to lose weight, big time. Weight training helps but for your scenario you need cardio and a solid diet.

Since you are having knee problems I suggest serious biking and swimming. Biking and/or swimming 5 days a week is good start. Next, look up a good meal plan and stick to it. No more alcohol except maybe once a week. Counting calories is the best way to drop pounds through diet. By that I mean serious negative caloric expenditure. A buddy ate 800 calories a day in energy bars for less than a year and lost 100 pounds. Not much exercise either.

That would be a good place to start but include the exercise to improve your CV system, which would require more caloric intake but not much, maybe 1000-1500 a day, max.

It takes work abd commitment, but how bad do you want it?

Wow!!! could not ask for more. There is some really good advice in this thread.
Biked yesterday and swam.Same today. Low carbing it and a little fruit in between meals.
When you have lifted as heavy and long as I have i.e. dumbass..(like anyone cares about the 40 something year old guy throwing around the 100lbs dumbells or at the squat rack with the bar bent as hell)...I've been in gyms my whole life and just recently people are going more cross-fit, trying to be leaner and healthier. Once you are out of college sports it's time to throw down the heavy shite so your joints are not crying like mine. Thanks guys and gals if any!
