WSJ

quote:

Five years ago, there were a dozen models of new cars that sold for less than $20,000. In 2023, there was only one: the spartan Mitsubishi Mirage hatchback

quote:

If you are willing to spend more than $100,000, you can choose from 32 models.

quote:

For the average American, paying off a new car at current prices demands 42 weeks of income, according to data from Cox Automotive, up from around 33 before the pandemic.

quote:

Bargains have been hard to come by on the used-car lot as well, where the average vehicle listed for about $27,000—up more than 30% from prepandemic levels, according to Cox’s data.

quote:

Higher interest rates have made the situation more difficult for buyers. Today’s average new car loan has a monthly payment north of $750, with an interest rate of 9.5%. For used cars, the average rate is above 13.7%, according to Cox. The average term for loans issued over the past three years is nearly six years,

quote:

Seasonalized rates of severe delinquency for auto loans are the highest since at least 2006

I mean, at some point these prices have to slow down.

My 2016 XLT F150 4x4 cost $37.5K. One today is over $60K.

It’s nuts. But you still have plenty of clowns ready to finance for 84 months

I got an xlt in 2016 as well for the exact same price. Then I got 10k for my Tacoma that had 125k miles on it from a private buyer. We didn’t know how good we had it

Except it won't, and it'll just keep getting pushed out with longer loan terms. People are financially morons, and the system needs us to keep spending since we refuse to allow for people to actually lose.

I was born the 60s, my parents never bought a new car until the late 80s. Looks like we're going back to those days

I'm getting ready to purchase early next year and I'm dreading having to do so with the current rates and vehicles being sold above MSRP.

The problem is you frickers keep paying it. As people keep buying new over and over again they will keep raising the prices unchallenged. If everyone started keeping their cars longer and buying used for a while they will have no choice to sell lower as demand slows and supply grows.

Where do yall pull these number from? A new Lariat starts at $57k. The costs are bad enough without exaggerating.

MSRP =/= actual price

Dealers are marking everything up. It's called Adjusted Market Value and idiots pay it.

My car was in the shop for a warranty and I walked around and everything on the lot was marked up $5-20K. It's insane.

You’d swear the OT was some Dave Ramsey offshoot.

You know these Prarieville/Central/Mandeville/Covington/Woodlands folks (or their ole ladies) aren’t riding around in used Camrys or Corollas.
