Would you pay out of state tuition or stay in Louisiana and go to ULM?

I'm at LSU about to earn my biology degree. Obviously not many people stop there; many go to medical school, etc. I've been thinking pharmacy school for a long time, but ULM is the only cheap option in state (~$13,000 per year). Xavier in NOLA is private and is more than $30,000 per year. Other schools I'm considering out-of-state are University of Houston (~$27,000 per year) and North Texas in Fort Worth (~30,000 per year). What says the O-T? Would you settle for ULM for cheap (even though I do not particularly like Monroe at all) or would you go somewhere better out of state for considerably more debt? I'm still weighing my options.

Does going out of state give you a better education or better opportunity? If not, go to ULM. Monroe isn't a cultural mecca, but it's not the worst place in the world, and you can stand anything for a couple of years. The other places may have more to do, but TBH, you'll probably just hang out with friends or go to a bar in your free time, and you can do that in Monroe.

How long is pharmacy school?

Go with the cheaper option for a similar degree.

Have you checked University of Mississippi's school? You may qualify for in-state.

Does Tulane no longer have a pharmacy school?
Also, you have a biology degree. I'd think you'd get quite a bit of transfer credits from that.

ULM's pharmacy program is top notch. Don't pay the extra money if you have to take on debt. Xavier's is good too. It basically keeps that university afloat.

Id spend the extra money and apply to all... Then see if which ones you get into... Might not have all the options. Sry for being the pessimist

My initial thoughts are Monroe is not that bad. You can do anything for a year or so. But 3 years is a long time. In honesty though, when I had to stay in Monroe a few times for work I always had a good time.
Another option might be to look at how long does it takes to get in state residence in tx? If you can move there and work for a year or so and get in state residence it might be worth the $60k you'd be saving in tuition to go there outta state (and assuming loans would be funding it then the interest would drive the costs well above $60k).

Didn't Xavier's pharmacy school get put on probation with respect to accreditation?

3 years in Monroe>doubling the amount of debt you will have for similar education. Also, I'm certain the cost of living in NOLA over Monroe will only increase the amount of loans that will be required, outside of tuition costs. Think smart, long term here bro.

As bad a rap as Monroe gets on here and some deservedly so, ULM pharmacy program is most definitely a great option. All my friends who graduated pharmacy school there are making bank.

I agree. If you're funding it (i.e, loans) I wouldn't pay ~$30k/yr for anything besides med school.

Monroe every time
Cheaper cost of school
National leader in field
Cost of living not bad at all
Easy commute to pharm school from any location you live
Easy drives / flights to major cities
4.5 hours to Dallas
4.4 hours to French Quarter
3 hours to little Rock
Plenty enough to see and do when needing a break from studying .....plan your breaks properly with cool trips

Fwiw, I had to make a similar decision 10 yrs ago for law school.
Granted the in-state school was LSU and not ULM, but I'm happy I stayed in-state. I'm still paying off loans, but would be paying SIGNIFICANTLY more had I went out of state.
I also just lived in the middle of nowhere (way worse than Funroe) for 3 years. Sure there were times take-out and a bar would've been nice but those 3 yrs gave me the experience I needed to be marketable in places I would actually want to be.
Short-term sacrifice for long-term benefits.
