What are you basing that on?

If your school district personnel director is vindictive enough, they can have your license suspended for a year or so. At least that's how it's done in MS sometimes.

This happened to a friend of mine in MS. They will do it.

Recently moved and took a job teaching high school. It's my fourth year teaching, but this is an awful place. However, I basically committed my college education to this career. I am currently working on my doctorate, but am completely depressed with this teaching gig. I want to teach college level and do research. Would quitting this job destroy that chance ?

I have a good part-time that pays about $18k. Another decent part- time job and I'm making decent money. I just am afraid quitting would basically undo the degree I'm pursuing.

I am sort of in the same but opposite boat.

Why would you do something you don't want to do?

You only have one life!

The people you should really ask are the faculty members in your doctoral program. Seriously, talk to them. Don't take my word for it.

Ask them how much teaching experience most grad students have by the end of their course of study. Ask them how much you need to be an attractive job candidate. Ask them if teaching at the high school level is better, worse, or equivalent to serving as a teaching assistant at the collegiate level. Ask them what you need on your CV in order to become a professor.

I could name a few Bama fans who should have quit before they met their "goals."

Well it sure won't help. If you're working on your doctorate, you're almost there. Suck it up, stick it out, and get where you want to go. It will look a lot better, will be worth it in the long run, and will just be a blip on the radar when you look back on it.

Ok the kids are the problem. So it sounds like you have two options for your remaining teaching contract (I agree with others that if you quit right now, you will def have license suspended):
1) make the best of this year as much as possible and then do not resign contract next year
2) quit and get license suspended

Overall, it sounds like you are stuck between rock and hard place. At the end of the day you signed the contract and probably should have went through this process before now (I am assuming your school year has begun). Own up to that for one year, and then you can leave. My advice is to get the knuckle heads on your side so that you can try to accomplish what you are setting out to do. You could even only give 4 tests out for the entire semester, similar to how college professors do.

Good luck, you can do it.

I taught for six years. Quit and went onto much, much better things with better pay. Those who say it will, are fools. Use your strengths and go from there.

You can quit but you really need to stick it out to the end of the school year first. Be professional about it.

Edit: I am a certified teacher in MS but I am letting my license expire next summer because I'm going to become a CPA instead. I'm taking 4 classes this fall and am not teaching this year.

Not meant to be funny. I am 27 and have my Admin license. My goal is to simply bust out a few solid years of continued success teaching state tested area subjects and then use that to become an administrator by the time I am 30. I would like to pursue either college or admin by age 30...I do not know why that is funny...

I want the option of either. Both to me are interests of mine and things I would like to pursue when the time is right. Just finding the niche.

If I stayed in education the two logical options are Ed. Leadership or Curriculum Inst. I am actually high on them both but feel Curriculum gives me more flexibility in the college ranks.

I honestly don't know much about those fields. This is why I suggested you consult current profs in these fields about your choice.

Good luck. I'm sure it is going to work out for you either way.

Be prepared to answer why you quit one job in education and are now pursuing a new job in education.
