I think it should be a requirement for all high- schooler's to work in retail for a bit.
Retail is pumpkin pie compared to working in restaurants, or construction. I frickin' hated waiting tables.

Probing pipelines for T Baker Smith in the marsh/swamp summer after first year of college.
$7/hr and worked a minimum of 60 hours a week.
I wouldn't do that job today if they paid me $100/hr and I only had to work 40 hours a week.
Every civil engineer should do that job first year after college, just to remind them why they are going to college and why they shouldn't be a slacker in school.

Commercial roofing in the summer in New Orleans and I did janitor work in high school for about two weeks. That job showed me just how nasty women can be. I had to clean the bathrooms for three floors in the Entergy building downtown. Women restroom were by far the nastiest From bloody pads and tampons everywhere but the trash, to pissy toilets since they use the hover technique. F both of those jobs.

I worked for an entomology (insects) lab that specialized in livestock entomology.
My job was to collect research quality manure to host the eggs that flies laid. Research quality meant that it could not be collected from the ground, I had to collect it straight from cows' asses.

For me it was working on an assembly line in a shop with no A/C.
I have 260 employees that are happily doing just this....they never complain. They also work with fire in conditions that can top 120 degrees in the heat of the summer. No doubt a tough job, however these employee are long term and are appreciative of their jobs. It's certainly not for everyone.

Curious to know why you hate being a cop so much? I've seen you say on this site multiple times that you hate it.
Obviously the pay isn't great but you are mostly in some sort of AC during the day. Also seems like you have a good deal of time off based on IST/IBT threads on the OB during hunting season.
Is it just life-draining non-fulfilling bureaucratic type work?

Casual position at the post office. Same day Split Shift: 4am to 9pm then 2pm to 7pm, 1 day off every 2 weeks (Sunday). Pulling bulk mail from gurnees and distributing them to the mail carriers stations.
Hated it to high heaven. Quit after a month. All of my fingertips were numb for about 2-3 more weeks before I get the feeling back.

Between freshman and sophomore years of college, I worked the city's Summer Daycamp program because it paid $12 an hour, a rate you couldn't get at the time doing other menial stuff. I had to supervise fourteen 8-year olds, all of them off of their frickin Ritalin for 8 weeks. It was like herding cats. Little methed-out, demonic cats.

Worked tech support for a company that made business software for salons.
I spent 8 hours a day, 5 days a week walking hair stylists through computer problems over the phone.
It was hell.

Worked for a septic cleaner. All day, every day of the summer, literally elbow deep in shite. I was dating the owner's daughter and she was a smoke show. Both the job and the girl only lasted the one summer.

Working at McDonalds at 4am because it's frickin' McDonalds.
or
Working at a printing factory for 12 hour shifts. The student/temp employees got shite on picking up the slack for the regular employees' vacation. You would end up working 14 straight days of 12 hours shifts, which was a great way to earn a butt load of money ($12/hour, time and a half for OT), but you had no life during summer/Christmas break

Amazing what people can get when they work their way up instead of job hopping

Branch Chipping Crew for BFI the summer after I graduated high school
required to wear long sleeves, jeans and steel toe boots. We rode in a truck that had a little shite metal box passenger cab that did not have access to the AC. One small window.
When you exited into the 95+ degree south Louisiana summer heat, it was a relief compared to that shite box. It was like the hot box on Django Unchained.
Then, you had the pleasure of lifting logs with high school drop outs who most likely had drug problems and shoving them into a chipper as fast as possible.
$6 an hour. 6 AM- 5 PM every day.
