Will these rains result in a Zika epidemic?

lots of standing water, for an extended period of time. People of child bearing years need to take precautions during clean-up

It's time to stock up on some bug spray.

Most water will drain relatively quickly after the crest. Not a whole lot of standing water.

There need to be Zika carrying mosquitos in our area first.

Already 1700 reported cases in the US, just in the last few months

All I know is after Katrina and Rita there was a heartworm epidemic, even among dogs that were on the preventative medicine.

Of which, how many originated here?
The mosquitos that transmit the disease travel no more than 150 yds from their home. They also take about a week to hatch out and mature to adults.
I just don't see this causing an issue because we haven't had reported populations of Zika carrying Aedes mosquitos in the area.
You're more likely to get Dengue fever or Chikungunya virus.

How did they get to Miami then? The virus was transmitted through a host, who was bitten by another mosquito that infected someone who hadn't traveled out of the Miami area
Same thing can easily happen here. Especially if the standing water creates a wave of hatchings. Plus, you will have people passing through the area that may have been in Miami, or even Rio for the Olympics
