proves my point. You have no sense of family. My "family" is without question "everything to me" and 6 days out of the week, i'd eat a bullet without hesitating for them.
Sensationalizing... nah,... seems like you did when you brought up the word family. burn mother fricker burn.

What company is good in the field? Wouldn't mind running the numbers.
I use Healthy Paws ( LINK ). Whenever I was looking into companies, they were the best fit for me. One of my dogs has a predisposition for urinary stones and hip dysplasia, both of which were not an issue (coverage wise) with this company. Coverage for me is around $40/ month with a pretty low deductible. Has already saved me some in the last couple of years, but I snagged it mostly for the end-of-life issues and health problems.

I have always been a fan of dogs and except for my college years, I've always had a dog or two. That being said, outside of the yearly shots and monthly heartworm medicine, my dogs each have an annual $400 "deductible." If something comes up that will cost more than that, then they will sadly have to take a long nap.

It's my understanding that vets do well
Not starting out they dont. And compared to other doctors it is even comparable.

How much do you think surgery should cost?
Same equipment, procedures, drugs (for the most part), etc. Many people dont realize that vet practices dont make their money off of surgeries and other procedures like human doctors do.

What is the name of the medicine your vet was screwing you over?
Posted on 7/26/17 at 10:56 am to maxxrajun70
I probably couldn't do it myself but a .22 round is around 5-6 cents...

Depends on your financial situation I guess. I personally would pay 4k for my dog. I love this little fricker. Y'all talking about putting your dogs down makes me wanna give my guy a hug right now. Savages.

Now I did discover that I can order the medicine for $90 instead of the $400 they vet charges, through Allivet.com. The fact that I can get the same exact medicine for that much cheaper really pisses me off, and makes me not trust what this vet is telling me. I sure as shite am not going back there. I understand making margin, but 300% margin is fricking ridiculous, and it's pathetic that they prey on peoples feelings for their pets to make their money.
I can promise you that the vet does not have a 300% markup on medication.

$400? Good lord. Are you poor?

My take is the thing is 8 he had a good run, but over $4k is too much. Pour one out for a fallen homie and move on.
Is that cold? (she said it was)
If you can drop $4k, and it not really affect you at all financially, you probably should at least consider it.

it just means that i'd spend when it costs to keep my dog alive. if you wouldn't spring to keep your dog alive, cool, no judgement here.

Then explain to me why I can get the same exact medicine online, for $90, when they charge me $400?
I asked them why they charged so much and they said they don't get the same kind of pricing that the online guys do, and they don't have the volume they have to sell at a lower margin. I get that, I really do, but they aren't any where near their pricing. I literally deal with the same scenario with the company I work for, and I will tell customers to go buy certain items from Grainger b/c they get better pricing. We still sell those same items, but we are marked up about 20% higher than Grainger, not 200-300%.
The sold me Vetmedin for $120
Furosemide and Enalapril for $80
Those 3 items last me two weeks.
I go order the same exact stuff online for $90, and it's double the quantity the vet was charging. So i'm getting 4 weeks worth for $90, when the vet was charging $200 for 2 weeks worth, of the same exact medicine. They literally come in the same exact bottle, same mg amount.

The money is meaningless. The real question is what kind of shape are they going to be in after all this work. If the answer is not very good sadly go ahead and put them out of their misery.
At the end of the day no matter how much you love them they're still a dog and they don't understand why they hurt all the time. I couldn't do that to mine

Well all of that is true. Usually it is around 75% for the lower priced items.
Generally the higher the medication costs goes, the lower the markup. Majority of vets make their money on boarding, food, and all those extra products your wife buys that are on display.
And as with anything else, the smaller the clinic the higher the markup.

i can afford to spend a pretty significant amount of money on my dog,
Not my argument, but didn't you also say you'd max your credit cards, mortgage your house, etc to pay for your dog? That to me is more "not having money" to spend on your dog. For someone who is independently wealthy, sure, no issues if they want to drop that coin on a dog to give them a few more tortured months, but if you're putting yourself into some pretty decent debt for the same outcome, your choice, but in my opinion not a great one.
