My American history teacher inspired me to become a teacher and sparked my passion for history. He would come to school dressed in full uniform of the 101st Airborne from WWII, 6th Infantry from Vietnam and others. He did reenactments all over and knew his stuff. He is also Native American and part of the Blackfoot Nation in Montana. He has all sorts of animal pelts and Civil War items as well.
When I became a teacher he gave me many of these items and I use them in my classroom. When I teach about Vietnam I always come dressed as the 6th Infantry with my M16 (I have special permission of course) and all other authentic gear.
Fun story, one day at school we went on lock down because he was walking through the halls with his M1 and a substitute teachers saw him and didn't know him. She called the office and said there was a shooter on campus.

She had expectations for us to do our work but was not an a-hole about it. She was laid back and just a genuinely nice person. I hated English but I enjoyed her class. Also, rounded up my grade at the end of the semester to keep me at an A.

If you're getting into education I've got a few tips for you. I'm finishing up year 16.
quote:Very true. A relative who was a high school teacher for 22 years once told me about controlling a class: "Don't smile before Thanksgiving; don't laugh before Easter. But let them be happy."
1. Before you can teach them anything your classroom atmosphere needs to be right. Some teachers are hardcore / no nonsense. Other teachers are way more laid back. The part that matches is that when it's go time there's procedures to get things started.
quote:This is the fastest way to get close to all the kids and get their peer-driven respect. And so easy to do. It's a community, so belong.
5. Be at events. The kids love when you show up to a game, music performance, or art show.
