Better question is why the hell are there small children in areas that are rampant with gators.

You obviously are not familiar with the FL ecosystem.

Can there not be a containment area for the body of water where this kid was? It's not that difficult to have an area designated for safe water activities

The water is clearly marked that it's not for swimming and that you should not enter the water. They have sand beaches with seating areas a good distance from the water. There are no water activities that go on in the lagoon other than ferry boats, rental boats for fishing & other rec and the nightly water electrical parade.

It had a no swimming sign, but hindsight is easy too. You're in Disney World, at a resort in 1 foot deep water. I can see how it happens

They'll probably have a new rule to stay away X number of feet away from the water after a certain time of day.

Hard to blame people from Nebraska for not knowing about the possibility of alligators.

It's been said numerous times that Disney frequently rounds up alligators and removes them from the park.

Disney didn't post the signs in Alligatorese and had them too high up, so they did not know they were not suppose to be in that area.

Why are there rats in New York City? I mean, has no one thought to get them out of all those buildings? Doesn't seem like a good idea to have them there.

Why are there mosquitos in the USA if we know they carry diseases?

I'm pretty sure it's natural. Because of sinkholes, Florida probably has more lakes than Minnesota.

The Seven Seas Lagoon is actually man-made. They dug out the land from there to build up the land where the Magic Kingdom and resorts now sit. They lagoon was then connected to what is now called Bay Lake, which is a natural body of water. And the shores of Bay Lake have minimal development along them.

When gators stop walking and only swim or when folks will pay big bucks for a view of a completely fenced in lake we can talk about containment.

This is a man made lake. It has to be fed by natural sources of water. Therefore it is connected to other bodies of water via canals and culverts. Gators love canals and don't mind culverts. There is no keeping gators out of any fresh water in Florida without a fence surrounding the entire body of water and killing all the gators in that water.

This is just a terrible, terrible accident. Nature is a bitch.

Also, this was bad timing too. It's mating season. They are more aggressive during this time. It was also right after dusk. They feed at that period. They go to the shallows to pick off small mammals and birds. The poor child was in the shallows, after dark, during mating season and was small.

Saw this earlier today. Supposedly taken same day as the attack.

quote:

For all that are following the Alligator tragedy in Orlando, here are three pictures of where the child was attacked, the first two are 30 minutes before it happened, the third is from March of this year. Absolutely terrifying.

Also of interest, apparently, unlike other resorts on the lagoon, there weren't any signs at the Grand Floridan saying no swimming.

Disney has comped all rooms at the Grand Floridian Resort. 867 rooms, averaging $560 a night. That's a half million a night.

My heart goes out to the family.

ETA: Pretty sure I see a "NO SWIMMING" sign in the 3rd pic though.

I live about an hour south of Macon, Ga and if there is a body of water of any type, there are going to be gators in it, and we do not have near the population of LA or FL. Cornhuskers don't typically have to worry about gators in a corn field, but they do have some culpability of not being aware of their surroundings, but in my opinion Disney has some blame themselves.

To someone from Nebraska, it likely means no swimming. Not no wading in 6 inches of water because an alligator might get you.

I am not taking sides. I think both parties have some fault. Just trying to see things from their point of view.

This is really on Disney here. the design is horrible if they were trying to keep people away from the water. They made it inviting
