I would be pissed if I paid $1,800 for a 2 bedroom and it gotta live 4 blocks from the homeless.
You must lose sleep at night thinking about the price of rent to bum ratio in NYC

The real reason they are still there is because a judge struck down the anti-panhandling law that New Orleans had. All the city can do is keep shuffling them around until they can install metal barriers under the expressway. If you've ever driven through Houston, you'll know the metal barriers I'm speaking of. I think that as long as it is accessible public land, then the homeless can legally squat there. Thank the ACLU for fighting to keep the homeless on the streets.

Yes I ride a bike but I was not on it at 5:30 yesterday.
And Wise, you seem very content with the problems of this city. Just like virtually every other person born and raised here. Some actually support the corruption, and just see it as part of life. Which is bullshite.

what would you do with them?
Posted on 9/3/14 at 11:39 am to Lester Earl
Kick them out and direct them to the Homeless shelters that are literally a quarter mile away.

When I moved to another city my bum to rent ratio was much higher. Like mentioned above the ACLU is part if the problem. Also they have places for these people to go, but they don't want to because they will have to follow rules. Like you can't do drugs. It's a slippery slope and a very controversial issue. If you don't like seeing bums I suggest you don't move to an urban setting.
And the only reason why they moved them out the first area was b/c of Saints season starting. I much rather NOPD efforts be focused on other more pressing issues than rounding up the bums.
At least here they are all confined to pretty much the inner parts of the city. Go to Houston and say hello to the bums posted up at the corners of the Katy Freeway from downtown to the burbs.
What do you suggest they do ?

I've seen a buddy post on FB about this. Organizations are going over there and feeding them and bringing them supplies and stuff. Isn't this sort of encouraging them to not go anywhere else?

I'm born and raised in New Orleans. I don't know anyone who is content with the problems. I've also never met a person who says they support corruption. I think you're either completely making that up or generalizing. Whoever you're talking about certainly doesn't speak for the entire city of New Orleans. New Orleans absolutely does have a crime problem (as do many other major US cities), but it's doing great by nearly every other metric. Record amounts of people are moving here daily, tourism rates are through the roof, and the housing market is on fire. I didn't even touch on how well the job market is doing, but it is. Start-ups are everywhere.
People who constantly bash on New Orleans are often just jealous of the city's success post-Katrina.

Where exactly can you encourage them to go? They know that sitting in areas with lots of traffic will get them the most money. A judge has already upheld their legal right to do so. They aren't going to just wander over to New Orleans East so that we don't have to see them every day. You can't fault humanitarian organizations for feeding them and such. These are human beings after all.
I feel like people aren't looking at this logically and are simply trying to bash on New Orleans. This could easily happen in Baton Rouge, if BR was as popular as NOLA.

For the record I'm not content with the problems here. However the bums and ride sharing are the least of the problems IMO. I just hate to see some who so called likes NOLA come and make these NOLA bash threads when they are ignorant to issues.

The ideal scenario is to find them housing somewhere. Not have them camped out under a fricking overpass. I think you are missing the point here. This behavior of going over and feeding them doesn't help them

We should criminalize homelessness and lock them up. Maybe enact a three-strike, life-in-prison rule. Think of the jobs.

Who is going to provide that housing? The city? The state? The federal government? These people have given up. They don't give a shite about finding housing.

You can't stop people from feeding them. In fact, the more you attempt to stop them from doing so, the more they will likely do it. They can legally feed and supply whoever they want. Most of the people feeding the homeless are religious organizations.
