It's typically not a very happy state in January.

Absolutely this. I know an absurd amount of people that are just blissfully ignorant when they're not liking "impeach obama" facebook pages.

It really is pretty impressive how many people like that live in the Deep South... Give them some people to judge and compete with on social media, a 1650 sq ft cookie cutter house built in the last decade, and a week in Orange Beach, and these people are very satisfied. It's like a competition to see who can out middle class who. I'm as middle class as can be, but shite I would hate the monotony of that. I have to go and see new things. Rant over.

It's way more difficult to accept when you see so many high school friends fall into that trap

CaptainPanic and prostyle hit the nail on the fricking head and it took less than a page and a half. This has to be a TD first.

Happiest due in part because the work ethic is probably the worst in the country and many people's priorities are fricked beyond recognition.
Trying to adjust to another region's work ethic after growing up in Louisiana is extremely difficult for many. A lot of the stuff that is tolerated back in Louisiana is not tolerated most other places, so it places young employees entering the workforce or taking jobs in other states at a disadvantage due to growing up in the state's culture social norms.

I mean, Alexandria is one of the most god awful places I've ever had the misfortune of living in. How on earth can anyone be happy there?

pretty easily, people value different things
I could be happy living almost anywhere.

Yet 40% of Louisiana residents want to move elsewhere. How is that possible if LA is one of the happiest states?

You can find a poll to say whatever you want.
