Ask yourself as a driver, "Will I sit here in the merge lane and hold up any traffic behind me and wait for an opportunity to get into traffic?" or "Will I slowly advance in the merge lane and MERGE into traffic in a smooth non-noticeable manner keeping a steady flow of traffic manageable?"

idealistic concept that will be impossible to achieve until a majority market penetration of connected or autonomous vehicles.

Sounds like you were driving behind my sister. Are you in GA?

People around here use center turn lanes as merge lanes and then don't know how to properly use merge lanes. Why they feel the need just as the merge lane begins rather than gaining speed and entering the interstate as close to the posted travel speed as possible is ridiculous.

Things like this are why I'm in favor of implementing yearly driving tests and will gladly pay for it too

Never heard of it. You talking about the area where you stop your car before you try and get in the interstate?

Sometimes traffic is just too dense to merge. Get over yourself.

In Covington where 190 meets I-12 there is a big arse long solid white line that probably extends for .5 mile to let drivers gain speed to properly merge and not frick up I-12 traffic....does it work? No.

People don't have any idea what the line even means.

I thought that line means we are all going the same direction but stay in your own damn lane and do not cross this line.

The west coast can merge just fine, the south can not merge if their lives depended on it. Drivers just suck in the south especially Baton Rouge.

Sometimes it's the fault of the main flow of traffic.

Only when they yield to someone who is attempting to merge. Now, if traffic is stopped the zipper effect and allowing those to merge works, but if traffic is flowing the travel lane should not yield to someone attempting to merge.

They are supposed to let them on.

Tose in the right lane have 3 options.

Left lane, or speed up, or slow down.

No, you obviously drive all the way to the end of your lane, come to a complete stop, then jump in front of the next car that leaves just enough room between there car and the one in front for you to squeeze in. Only difficult part is making sure you give the obligatory thank you wave before they give you the You're Welcome honk.

Freaking A*holes aren't patient enough for me to thank them before they say You're Welcome.

Drive from BR to Slidell and you'll see people in the right lane jumping to the left lane (going 70 MPH) so someone can merge on to I-12 going 60 at just about every major on ramp.

That is an absolutely terrible stretch of highway for stupid drivers.

The worst one, IMO, is right were I-49 starts just north of 10. Posted 70 MPH and slow traffic keep right signs all over the place and people just chill going 50 in all lanes.

While considered "courteous" by some, especially to trucks you're not supposed to.
quote:

Whenever you enter traffic, signal and be sure you have enough space to enter safely. You have to share space with traffic already on the road and must know how much space you need to merge with traffic and pass other cars.
Enter the interstate at or near the speed of traffic. Remember that the maximum speed allowed is 70 miles per hour unless otherwise posted. You should not drive slower than the posted minimum speed on the interstate unless the weather or road conditions demand slower speed. Always try to drive at a steady speed.

Begin checking traffic while on the entrance ramp. Do not move slowly to the end of the entrance ramp and stop. Start your turn signal to warn other drivers. Look for a gap in the approaching traffic. Then, adjust your speed to meet that gap. As you merge, make sure you are traveling the same speed as other traffic. Do not stop before merging with interstate traffic unless it is absolutely necessary. Interstate traffic has the right of way. You can’t always count on other drivers either seeing you or moving over to give you
space to enter.

Now, if you are referring moving to the left lane when it is completely free (not oh, there is a car but it's 200 fete back there), that's different.
