Why hasn't there been Grand Isle development?

Spent 3 nights in NOLA recently (didn't get shot) and had an extra night so we decided to go to Grand Isle for a night

Had a few beers at Artie's, had a good meal at the Starfish and stayed at the Blue Dolphin, about 50 yards from the beach. The wife and I took a cooler and lawn chairs to the surf and sat for hours and never saw anyone else. We had total privacy, like our own beach. Granted this was a Wed night

Just curious why Grand Isle hasn't been developed like most other beaches up and down the coast i.e. condo's, resorts etc Local ordinance, shallow surf? I couldn't see any negatives, granted we didn't get in the water. Just wondering why everyone goes to Gulf Shores, Fl etc when this beach is much closer.

Pretty ugly water and beaches and even trashier locals than anywhere to the east along gulf coast.

Plus they are losing beach to to sinking or sea rise so everything will get leveled with the next decent sized hurricane that hits

Been going to Grand Isle for 20+ years. The sand is sub par and the water smells like dead fish. Unless you love fishing there's no reason to go down there. Especially when touristy beaches are only about 3 hours from NOLA.

It's good as is.

Could use another restaurant or two.

You don't go to Grand Isle to bring the family to the beach and swim in the water so there's no demand for nice condos and a lot of infrastructure.

The beach is gross. Water is gross.

Locals are the worst white people on earth.

I go there to fish and drink/cook at camp

Nothing more

Who would to develop on an island where the residents are assholes to the outside world?

I grew up with my family having a camp down there. Had it since the 50's and lost the entire thing to Katrina. My dad, who loved to fish, hasn't been back since.

Going back recently, I had a blast. I don't know why there isn't more development down there but I hope it stays that way. Go down there during the Tarpon Rodeo and you'll wanna go back every year.

Beach is great for fishing but not so great for bikinis.

I've been thinking about getting on the government tit and moving down there. Hustle up some cash money work and live the good life.

there are camps that have been standing for 30+ years yet you are predicting that the next "decent" hurricane will level everything?

Besides the obvious issues of aesthetics of the water and beach, there is also the problem of travel. There is only one way in and one way out.

Not to mention the plethora of near shore oil rigs and the active commercial fishing industry (more beauty issues). Minor spills can shut down the beach, and I was down there once when a fishing boat lost a lot of its catch somehow and thousands of menhaden washed ashore.

No one wants any of that in a resort setting.
