erally invented the Mardi Gras parade in 1857 . Were tired of putting on an expensive free show for the people of New Orleans and leapt at the chance to not parade after being persecuted by their own city for essentially wanting to hang out with their friends. Do you really think there are any Asian black lgtb Wahabists green peace members or oompah loompahs who sincerely want to attend the Comus ball? It's really not very exciting unless it's your daughter or granddaughter being presented. Shameful the way they were treated after having done so much for the city.

Yea I feel so sorry for a bunch of millionaires who control the city's banks and/or inherited their lifestyles... Tough life

Not necessarily or as a rule. My dad is a member of pickwick but not any of the old line krewes, as is the case with several of his friends

Actually, I don't think there are enough and I miss the parades being in various locations like during the 70's and 80's.

you can thank NOPD for that. They single handedly killed the westbank parades. They forced all those parades to not roll in Orleans or move to the Uptown route. Alla and Cleopatra complied. Nomtoc is the only one that still rolls on in Algiers I think.

I think they have the right number of parades now. A lot of the Metairie ones are dying off due to lack of memebers. The lone three left standing might very well be Caeser, Napoleon, and Argus out there. The rest are really rinky dink parades.

It's so damn hard to start a new krewe these days, and im quite sure city council in NOLA makes it damn near impossible to get new permits it seems.

Looks like Adonis starts in Orleans and ends in Jefferson. Is that the old Cleopatra route?

Declining membership played no part in it?

After Alla’s public plea in April for 200 new members went unanswered, the krewe was left with no choice but to leave, Robichaux said.

Calling the krewes' moves to Uptown a loss of the West Bank’s identity, Robichaux laid their troubles at the feet of residents. He said riders have told them about passing along the West Bank route to empty spots with no one to throw to and houses where folks are gathered around the television instead of at the curb.

Could have solved that by shortening the route, but starting way up past Kabel Drive on General deGaulle Drive, then turning into Jefferson Parish via new Behrman Highway, Carol Sue, to Stumpf to the Expressway, then down the Expressway past Lafayette St. is just waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much for the West Bank.

Alla originally stood for ALgiers LA, just as Grela is for Gretna, LA.

I miss the old Krewe of Carrollton route

One of my fondest Mardi Gras memories was when Krewe of Mid-City still had their old route and I was at Lee Circle. McMain's (before I started going there) marching band was making the turn and the sky was an orange hue and it just looked amazing.

KMC used to have, perhaps they still do, have the best band competition of all the parades. It still slays me that Mid-City runs Uptown.

yeah. I'm glad Jeff Parish put some rules in place for these parades. It go to the point where they'd have floats rolling by with no one on them. Rinky dink is a good word for it.

The Metry parades used to be fun. But something happened; declining membership, and a bad element that took over certain portions of the parade route is part of it.

Meh, I doubt that had much to do with it.
I think alot of it is that people just want to parade in N.O. alot more these days. Hell, they have two or three all women's groups parading in N.O. now that are huge and have waiting list for members.
Thoth is full up every year now with over 1600 members.
