Why do you like small town life?

This is coming from someone who lived in Leesvile for most of his childhood.

I enjoyed the outdoor activities occasionally, but I never really like small town life. Got along okay with most people. But I disliked that most people had little motivation to better themselves.

Marriage is a blessing, but I never saw it as "the ultimate goal". I've always been career focused.

I understand from other posts on here that some prefer a simple life. I can respect that. It is just not the life for me.

For the most part, I lived in small towns in LA due to circumstances and NOT by choice.

Does anyone here have an experience where you live in a small town only because of a job?

I lived in a really small town in SW PA for the last 2 years i was there.

I could ride my arctic cat to the local bars 10 miles away.

But im a trashy redneck at heart

Low cost of living.

Easy commute (even though it's a bit long).

Privacy/being left alone for the most part.

Better job opportunities than NOLA.

It doesn't have to be a metropolis. I loved Baton Rouge. I wish I could live in Dallas, Atlanta, Jackson, etc.

Lived in Atlanta for over a year, New Orleans for almost 10, Baton Rouge for about 5.

Postage stamp sized yards, crappy neighbors, and HOA rules....what's not to like about that?

I prefer a small City.

I would hate to be one of those people who live in small town USA and never know anything outside of the city limits. at the same time I hate the crime, traffic, and density of big cities.

I like living where I do now. We have some amenities of a big city but not all the big city problems. And it's big enough to not be Bridgeport, AL.

That and we are about 2 hours from any of 5 big cities.

Less hustle and bustle, less “commercial” life, MANY more family-oriented people and places. Crime still exists but it’s less frequent and the fact that most people know each other makes it harder for burglaries to occur.

Give me rural living over urban, subdivision living any day of the week.

high crime rate is usually accompanied with less entry level work. Are job opportunities in NOLA really THAT bad.

Privacy, less crime (for the most part), less traffic to deal with. The downside is that everyone knows everyone and gossip can run rampant.

My wife and I have lived in the ATL metro area for about a decade now and we’d like to like somewhere smaller.

The traffic issues have gotten old. Also, being somewhere where this is “a lot to do” means that everyone fills their lives with so much busyness. No one has time to just slow down and call or check on a friend, or have someone over for lunch (myself included). Just doesn’t feel like community.

Not anywhere near as good as the Landmass. I'm making a lot more than I was in NOLA. And I came here in part because job listings consistently showed much higher salaries for similar positions.

I actually took a small pay cut the last time I changed jobs. Worth it, but I could also afford it.

Living in a small town or city seems terrible to me. Big city or country, nothing in between.

Depends on the small town. Small towns in Louisiana are typically filled with fat people, religious nuts, litter, and dead dogs that people were too lazy to either keep in the house or provide suitable living for. Probably got some culcha in there too.

Small towns in New England are filled with upper/middle class folks who want to promote fiscal responsibility and send their kids to good schools.

The right kind of small town can be great. I’m currently in Worcester, Massachusetts. City is abou the size of Lafayette but has about 10 universities. Parks everywhere. No litter. Almost no culcha. Indoor soccer, football, sports facilities, hiking/skiing/backpacking within a half hour drive. Higher cost of living but better than any city in Louisiana and probably cheaper than Nola

Small town = no dam traffic. Kind of pisses me off catching one of the 5 red lights in town.

Every time I go to BR or NO, I think to myself how the hell people can live like that. And yes, I lived in NO for 18 years.

You wish you could live in Jackson lol? You’ve obviously never been. Dallas is great and ATL isn’t terrible but Jackson is like a bigger Leesville. Only place in Miss with living is Oxford.

I grew up in Baton Rouge in the 80's and 90's, so of course we are not talking about Gotham City, but it isn't Mayberry, either. When I moved overseas, I lived in a city of 4 million people. It was fun and exciting at first, but after a couple of years it became a drag. When my job relocated to a small town about three hours south of the city, I was more than happy to move. Now, this town had a population of 35,000 but compared to where I was living it was a small town. When I moved back to the U.S., I moved to what is technically a small town, but it fast becoming just a suburb of Covington/Mandeville. Still, it is a lot better than having to live in Baton Rouge or New Orleans. I enjoy living in the smaller places because I enjoy my space. In Sydney it seemed like your neighbors were living on top of you and a 20x30 foot backyard was considered "big."

Are you saying there are less "entry level" jobs in NOLA than there are in Leesville?

I'm sorry

Been living in L.A. for 5 months now and I am currently back in Louisiana for the holidays. I see the appeal of both honestly and each have pros and cons. I missed Louisiana while I was gone but now I miss my life in Cali and am ready to get back to it.

Out of pure preference I am all about small town simple life and will eventually get back to it but there are too many things to experience while I still can to stay here now.

I prefer the mid-sized town like Birmingham. Big enough to have plenty of job opportunities, but small enough to avoid most of the major issues of a larger city.

I know many small town people from my family and childhood. Every time I'm around them the discussion centers around home projects, satanic people in their neighborhoods, neighbors who aren't up to par with them, church duties, and food. I've never heard so many discussions about what needs to be done to prepare for the next meal.

I've lived in a downtown condo in a big city for the last decade and have never once thought about anything these people deem as major discussion topics. I walk or bike to work, play a lot of golf, and walk down to my local watering hole or restaurant and have a few drinks with friends if I get bored discussing the local sports teams.

The difference between my life and my families mesmerize me, but what mesmerizes me the most is their inability to realize that there is life out there outside of their 10 mile radius.
