Not sure it's about being poor. I bring home about two thousand a week. I signed up on direct deposit with the company but it never went through for some reason. So I take my arse up to Walmart and cash my check every Friday morning. I then deposit the appropriate amount in the appropriate account. I realize that I'm still considered poor.

Does your bank not accept paper checks?

This doesn't make sense. Just because your direct deposit isn't set up doesn't mean that you have to cash your check at Wal Mart. You can even deposit a check at an ATM or by taking a picture of the check with your phone. Then once it is in your checking account you can electronically distribute your money to whatever accounts it needs to go.

I always went to whichever bank the check was from and cashed it h free there.

A lot of the bigger chains, i.e. Wells Fargo, will not cash the check for free if you don't have an account with them*.

WF once tried to charge me somewhere between $5-$10, within the past cpl of years, to cash a check from one of their customers (a personal check that was written to me off a Wells Fargo account, from a Wells Fargo customer) to me. I took it to another Wells Fargo and they cashed it with no mention of a fee. This is apparently only on personal checks, not checks from a business account.

*The worst part is that they are not consistent. Depending on the teller, how you look, are dressed, etc, they may or may not try to charge you the fee while claiming it is policy.

Which, after watching Last Week Tonight Sunday evening and seeing the shady shite WF was caught doing with their incentive based account sign up program, nothing they do is hsurprising that they are a piece of shite bank. I have never liked them, but my mother uses them.

Tl;dr Some banks charge you to cash a check drawn off one of their customers if you're not also a customer.

ETA: as if this post wasn't Kong enough, here's more.

I had a bank decline to give me change for a $100 bill once because I wasn't a customer.

I was triggered due to lack of expected privilege.

Yes. I can do all of those things but I've never tried it. Does it post immediately or does it take a while?

Sort of off topic, but those who have lived in BR at least 25 or more years ago, do you remember what seemed to be the only place to cash checks without a bank back then?

Before the invention of the ATM, you had your network of friendly retailers that you'd try to stay tight with so that you could cash a check when needed. My dad was a doctor so his go to places were all pharmacies.
