Forest Trail Sports University is offering student-athletes something no academic institution can provide under the rules of the NCAA: a chance to practice a sport year-round while earning a college credential.

Forest Trail can do that because it is in no way a traditional academic institution: It has no faculty members, not even part-time instructors. It is not accredited, and it does not offer its own courses.

In addition, she said, Forest Trail is offering her a $20,000 scholarship.

That amount will cover more than half of the listed price of $38,700, which includes tuition at Waldorf, a double room on the Barber-Scotia campus, and 14 meals per week, according to the company’s website. She said she planned to work to cover the rest of the cost.

So, people are going to pay nearly $20,000 for a worthless degree so they can play "college sports."

Why do people even consider for-profit, non accredited institutions is beyond me.

They are going to play a bunch of NAIA teams, now that the NCAA has finally put the hammer down.

Yes, people were starting fake colleges in order to field football teams to get federal financial aid money and game guarantees.

Here's another article about the practice: LINK

Is the idea here that you make your own "redshirt" year to try to get picked up by another school the next year?

Not really. Teams have 30 year olds on them. Its just a racket to make money for the pastor/coach/university president.

These outfits are generally run by black churches. There was one in the Jackson area a few years ago (Christ Missionary and Industrial, CM&I) that did so in the high school sports realm. It was a joke. They won a Class A basketball state championship before they were outed as what they were - a school where all they did was play basketball.

Its a shame that higher education has been infiltrated by such. Shame on the legitimate colleges that schedule these teams. Looking at you Mississippi College.

From one of the linked articles:

People say there's a ton of money in college football. No. There's a ton of money at the tip-top of college football. The vast rest hustles for what might or might not trickle down. This fall, Texas A&M, of the peerless Southeastern Conference, paid Lamar University, of the lesser Southland Conference, no small amount of money to come lose 73-3; Lamar paid Mississippi College much less to come lose 55-10; and Mississippi College paid the University of Faith even less to come lose 56-14. "That's just how it works," said Mike Jones of Mississippi College. Four degrees of separation, stair-steps of "guarantees," the backbone of college football — connecting the moneyed SEC to the University of Faith, which is not affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics or any other recognized sports governing body; which practices on a city soccer field; which still owes $33,000 at Sarasota's Ball & Shoe.
