Because thy have sugar and ate easy on the stomach. When you cannot eat you need calories from some source and these sugary drinks fit that bill.

Carbonation helps ease the stomach pains

7up and Sprite are caffeine free and thus don't add to the problem with the runs when you have a stomach virus. Same for Ginger Ale. No caffeine is the reason.

Home Treatments
Here are some things you can do at home to feel better when you have a cold or the flu:
Drink plenty of clear liquids, including water and juice. Drink 8 ounces every 2 hours.
If you smoke, quit. Stay away from others who smoke. It irritates your lungs and causes a dry, hacking cough. For help to quit smoking, see our resources to quit tobacco.
Get plenty of rest.
Take acetaminophen (Tylenol), aspirin (not for people younger than 20), or ibuprofen if you are uncomfortable.

It's what I remember as a little kid.My Mother brought me 7up and soda crackers.

And I like the taste of orange juice and cheese toast together for some reason.

Notice the first step in flu treatment? Drink clear fluids..... People like soft drinks... Coke and dr. pepper are dark... Anytime u are sick the first thing a doctor will say is drink plenty of clear fluids....

BTW: my dad is a doctor.

It's also good that is has sugar and sodium to help ur body recover after vomiting for hours, but coke has that too... The question was why is 7up/sprite better for sick people than a coke "even caffine free coke"

its because they go through your system quicker and keep you hydrated better. A flat coke helps with an upset stomach too...

Why do I feel as if everyone on this board is inferior to me?

That and they are caffeine free. Caffeine irritates the gastric lining. And some say the coloring agents do to.

Wrong!!! Carbonation increase gastric pressure and can worsen vomiting. We tell people to drink it flat. The sugar is soothing. That's all over the counter emetrol is for N/V. Sugars. Ginger ale is actually better than both. Real ginger ale. Ginger is a natural anti-emetic and it's less carbonated than the soft drinks listed. And caffeine free as well.

There's actually something to it. It helps settle the stomach, quenches thirst, and hydrates you much better than coke does. I was in a children's hospital for 3 weeks, and they served me plenty of 7 Up while I recovered.

Water or sports drinks are the best thing you can drink when sick. I've never heard that drinking 7up has any benefits when you're vomiting.

Sports drinks yes. Water no. Plain water can increase nausea on an empty stomach. Sports drinks have glucose that gives you calories and the sugar soothes the stomach. And replaces lost electrolytes. Pedialyte and it's equivalents are better but tast like arse.
