Why do cords intertwine themselves in the dark?

I can carefully place extension, computer, or any cords in a nice coiled spot and when I come back the have mated them selves like rabid rabbits, and earbuds cords will randomly tie themselves in knots. WTF is going on!

Typical behavior of cord trolls. They live by your electronics and mostly come out at night.

While I've never seen mine, I'm 100% sure he exists.

I tie wrap all of my cables at work and at home and that eliminates the problem for me. A bit of a pain in the arse initially but worth it.
