Many schools across the country have strong academics and athletics. Texas and Cali come to mind. IN BR, catholic is an example of both. Even Ben Franklin has a football team. Why cant BRMHS or Lee have a football, basketball, or baseball team?

Catholic has a magnet school BECAUSE of sports, not vice versa.

Catholic is also not a public school

And magnet schools have sports...just not the ones you are likely interested in.

Not enough athletes. Their Cross Country and Rasslin teams are always good.

They competed with us in Cross Country(7-4A) and track in the early 90s.

Then your options are technology or soft jazz save the sports for the others.

the focus of magnet schools should stay on academics and the arts, not sports.

Magnet schools should also ONLY be magnet. No regular neighborhood kids mixed in with magnet kids.

They tried that with Scotlandville Magnet High School in the mid 90s(thankfully after I graduated) and it failed miserably.

I actually chose NOT to go to BR High b/c of football. Turned out fine and there were about 10 of us in same boat(went to McKinley magnet but then to Woodlawn b/c of football). I don't think I'd want my kids doing that.

Exactly.

If someone wants to play one of the major sports, then the magnet program is not for them.

It's a specialized program and the school isn't designed to be all things to all people.

Dude a big fat blackeye / lie of deseg order was happening at Buchanan Elementary in the mid 80s. They took all the smart white kids around BR and bussed us to the middle of the hood for advanced classes. We got a great education and head start on the rigors of McKinley.
But we 3-4 blacks in our classes in 4th and 5th grade. All while next door to 100% black classrooms of 'regular' students.

Eta: bussride was about 1.5 hours long each way. We Picked up every damned white kid along highland from CCL(was just being built) to University Gardens.

I was in gifted and went to Greenville Elementary. Same thing. Wasn't really that big a deal in elementary school though.

Now in HS or middle school...it makes a huge difference.

Most of all the good teachers hauled arse from SMHS when they heard it wasn't gonna be just magnet. I graduated in 96, changes took place the following year. My brother still went there and saw firsthand what a difference it made. Went from maybe one fight a year there(like us nerds knew how to fight) to fights daily. Place became a mini war zone from how he describes it

Me, too. I was at MMM when Jindal was there (he was Piysh then), got accepted to BRHS but went to Lee because I wanted to experience football.

Looking back, stupid move on my part

No doubt. I wouldn't blame them. McKinley Middle Magnet's 'magnet program' was MOVED from Glasgow(in Southdowns) for obvious reasons a few years before I got there. We had some AWESOME teachers. I remember so much of those lectures/lessons to this day.
