Because they didn't run the 12/16 V power?

Relatively inexpensive

It has a free wire running upstairs to the unit to hardwire in but I guess the lazy frickers who built the house didn't feel like messing with it.

Programmable thermostats need power to operate and retain memory. Depending on how many thermostat wires come from your air handker, there may be no complete power circuit to supply constant power.

You are poor.

There is no power to the house?

Of course. My air conditioner runs on electricity.

I just got a nest and was pleasantly surprised to see it powers off the low voltage ac input. Also it's the easiest thermostat of all time to install. Even runs a diagnostic to make sure each connection does what it should.

All my older ones took AAA batteries.

Some thermostats simply don't have a terminal for hardwiring power and can only be powered by batteries. Why manufacturers make them that way I'll never know.

I didn't build my house I guess the builder went cheap. It couldn't have saved that much.

It's not just cheap ones though. There are actually quality thermostats with sophisticated features that are batteries only. Maybe it's an international thing? Who knows.

Seems a combo would be nice so you might not lose your settings after a power outage.

I've seen thermostats that are battery powered in multi million dollar houses, I don't think it's a cheap vs non cheap thing.

You may be on to something because for some reason we lose power hear often. I don't even change my stove. What type of settings do people have? I never looked into it.

Nothing to do with cheap vs expensive. There is already a wire ran to the thermostat from a power source

Why wouldn't it run on the power source?

I don't 100% know to be honest but I know some just don't have a terminal there to hook the hot strand to. I think it's just so they will not lose programming if the power goes out.
