Why are people so "look at me" about being sober for a certain amount of time?

We should honor the people who never had a problem instead.

Well then it's not hard for them or an accomplishment. It is for people who have struggled with sobriety.

it's a reinforcing mechanism created by AA
it's not a bad thing, especially considering so many people with addiction issues have guilt over terrible things they've done or how their addiction helped frick up their life. i mean they're living in a completely different world than normal people and simple affirmation and support goes a long way in that world

This was not a prudent thread you chose to start.

How about? Look at me, I've been drunk for the last 22 years!
Posted on 2/14/17 at 5:14 pm to Jtigers99
Because they've been drunk for years and lost everything

this thread is like making fun of a person who was a welfare king/queen their whole lives celebrating getting a job at McDonalds, b/c we think working at McDonalds is beneath us. or making fun of a fat person in a gym

If getting some positive attention for remaining sober helps them keep on the straight and narrow than I'm all for it.
Even if they are being high and mighty about it I see little reason to shite on an addict for staying clean b/c they are probably a way bigger dickhead and extremely self destructive when using.

Because it's a huge struggle for them to stay sober, it likely hurt a lot of their relationships and they are proud of themselves

Because it's a big fricking deal for those people... it's literally the difference between life and death for an addict
a-hole
a-hole

It could possibly have a negative effect as well
If someone goes public with their sobriety then relapses, they may not reach out for help because their pride might get in their way.. I've seen it happen before

Lot of sensitive drunks on the OT during happy hour

Let them feel good about themselves. I recognize they are proud of overcoming some adversity and if it helps keep them going I am all for it.
