Why are new variants of Covid NOT named Covid-21?

Since Covid-19 stands for "Corona Virus Infectious Disease 2019" why aren't the new ones indicated by year?

Because it needs to be named for its origin and the origin was in 2019 and all subsequent strains were variants of the original 2019 virus

It is actually SARS-CoV-2, Covid19 is just marketing by the WHO.
