I started going to the office at 5 am a couple years back so I could avoid getting the kids ready for school and read td.Com and organize my fantasy team rosters in peace and quite.

I believe it.

4am = fewest distractions and clarity of thought.

I wrote 1/3 of a paper at 400am when I couldn't fall back asleep.

I was in the zone, didn't want to put contacts in, so I zoomed in and typed as fast as I could think!

As someone who recently retired from architecture...most architects were getting 5 hours a night or so (and plenty of all-nighters mixed in here and there).

The job is just not conducive to sleep. Most, if not all, are innovative types and enjoy the creative aspects of the job. Architecture is certainly not a 9-5.

I'm pretty much retired and keep the same hours as Bill Gates. Only a billionaire, a bum or a retiree can sleep until 7 am and get away with it.

I used to get up at 5:45 and was in my car headed to work before 7:00. Leaving that early, I could be in my office by 7:20-7:30. I made coffee and ate breakfast when I got to the office. Pretty much had a 60 person office to myself until about 7:50. I could check my messages and email while I ate. I tried to do things like reports or printing before others got there.

I stayed up until midnight back then too, so I wasn't even getting six hours. I was one of those boring people that worked while they went to college. It took me six years to get a bachelor's degree, because I had a couple of good construction jobs that I didn't want to leave until I'd cleared a set amount. After I graduated I worked two jobs for over 20 years. The second one didn't pay well, but I enjoyed it. I enjoyed my "real" too actually.

In architecture, you typically spend your first portion of the day (8-12) either on-site going through check throughs or client consultations. Your (1-4) is also spent on client consultations or on-site. I should add that there is no such thing as only a few client consultations. We'd average around 7 to nail down the final product.

That said, the majority of our "work" began post 9-5 hours.

Waking up at 4 or 5 am for me means one thing...I need to bang my woman. So that's what I do.

Then I sleep til 7 or so and go to work with a smile on my face. Just about every day.

I go to bed for 1am and wake up usually around 11am, if I'm being lazy I'll wait until noon. My day usually is pretty normal

I don't care what anyone says, 4 a.m. is a great time to get up, workout, and get ready for the day. It feels like you accomplish more than anyone else before they wake up.
