I'm considering a whole house generator for a 2800 sq. ft. living area house. What should I expect to pay, what's the best brand and would the price be better after hurricane season is over? I would like it powered by natural gas.

Petty sure the cheap part is the generator. I think hooking it up is gonna cost the most

$10-$15k

Buy a $1,500 generator and pay an electrician $500-$600 to put a transfer switch on your box.

Get a ‘tri-fuel’ generator and you can have a natural gas connection installed by a plumber.

I hear the Generacs that crap out after a few days are under $10K. If you want one that’s dependable, closer to $20K.

Do your research. I’ve heard of numerous whole house generators that have crapped out, some even less than a year old.

There’s gonna be so many people buying whole house generators after this that the price is going to get even higher. On top of that people have no clue the maintaining these things really require and will end up burning them up.

My plan is to buy a real nice generator and have the transfer switch type thing installed like another poster mentioned above.

My generac was $11k installed, 22kw. It works like a charm for last 5 years. People who say that generac standby generators are crappy, don’t have a standby generator.

You better hurry up and get on a waiting list. I’ve heard from a few people that due to Covid and now the storm, they don’t have any available until next April.

Actually, the people I’ve heard saying Generac generators are crappy had Generac standby generators.

There were talks of a lawsuit against Generac after Hurricane Laura because so many of their generators failed. Many of them were almost brand new.

Generac has earned the poor reputation they have.

The family members that have a Generac standby generator haven’t had any issues. 7-8 years old. Ran for about 4-5 days without issues after Ida before the electricity returned.

I think they have around 22kw systems. So probably air cooled.

I’m moving down there next year and will be going with a liquid cooled system.

I know someone with a solar array in their yard. They probably had 50 mph winds in Ida. Next time I see them, I will ask how it handled the storm.

I’m curious about it as well.

Who are these people whose generators crapped out less than a year old? Let’s get them on here posting. I haven’t actually met one yet. Just a bunch of people claiming this has happened to people they know.

Generac 22kw about one year old just ran for four straight days without issue.
