I remember the REAL report cards from elementary school in the '70s. You got an envelope with an individual report card from each subject. There were multiple areas in which you were graded - receiving a triangle, a check, or an X.

Some Montessori schools still do something like this--multiple sections on one subject, with an X for skill acquired, slash (partial X) for working on skill, etc. Filled out by hand with a handwritten note at the end describing strengths and areas that need improving.

And the parents get the 3rd copy of the carbon copy paper (school office & teacher get first 2 layers), so sometimes they're almost impossible to read if the teacher didn't press down hard enough with the pen.

I remember in elementry school, we had the blue report cards. It was, I guess made from card stock paper. It had the subject, then a space for each 9 weeks and the kids who got F's in a subject, it would be written on the card in red ink, to stand out from the other grades.

They passed them out every 9 weeks, you brought them home to get signed, return them to the teacher.

Who remembers report cards?

I went to Catholic school and the Priest would visit each class to pass them out. He would stand at the front of the class, call your name out, open your report card and view it. For me, lots of times he would mumble something and hand me my report card. I remember that shite like it was yesterday.

Now I have to yell at my kids weekly instead of once every nine weeks.

Not even a week's break?Your kids must suck at school.
