Yep and I had free incoming calls. I would call my friends and hang up so they would call me back and I didn’t have to use minutes.

Every suburban kid who wanted to pretend he was a contractor had one.

I have a rescue dog. I guess his previous owner had a Nextel walkie talkie phone. When he hears that chirp he goes ballistic. It's kind of funny I have to calm him down.

When I would hear two people using the walkie talkie feature to have a conversation with each other I never understood why couldn't they just fricking call each other instead of having everyone around having to hear that noise each time they talked to one another.
Because back in the day you had to pay for minutes and roaming charges and the walkie talkie was free.
There was a feature that you could talk and not use the speakerphone.

Had the original brick Nextel phone in 1999-ish then went to the flip one. Had them through work, which was pretty
And I had to make sure to turn off the sound when it was in my booksack at LSU. There were a couple of funny moments during the middle of a quiet class

Company issued. One time I was talking to a coworker on it and Told him I needed to go into bank and would call him back in a few. Couple minutes later I’m standing in line, hear my phone chirp and then out of the speaker “every body down this is a stick up”. I went to pawing at the phone to turn it off. Every body is looking at me like I’m on fire. The cop at the desk stood up with hand on pistol and glared at me. I told him he should follow me back to work because I was going to kill someone.

Nextel wasn't ATT in any form. Sprint bought them.
AWS (ATT Wireless) was separate from ATT, they were bought by Cingular, who was ATT, well BellSouth, who was ATT at one time. Cingular competed alongside AWS until they bought them. Then they changed their name to AT&T (Mobility).
So....yeah....

We had these for our boat company. It always amazed me that noone knew how to put it on vibrate and use the walkie talkie like a regular phone.

People who used these, back in the day, are the ones starting threads today about not wanting to hear speakerphone conversations in public.
I only used one because I had to for work. I hated it.

A good friend of mine had Nextel and was one that was always calling people just because it was the “it” thing to do. We were in line at Taco Bell one time when his phone goes *beepbeep* “BIG arse TITTIES YAW. BIIIIG AAAASSSSSS TIIITTTTIIIIES.” I’m dying laughing while he’s struggling to get the phone out and silence it. Best part about it was this old lady in front of us laughing harder than me at him.
Good memory. Thanks for this thread, op.

I switched from Motorola to a Primeco phone.

My best story of Nextel is, me and a coworker are at a work related luncheon with about 200 people. The mayor of our town was the guest speaker and was asked to say the blessing for the food. Perfect timing, mid prayer both of our phones beep beeped and two other coworkers voices rang out above the silenced crowd, “Awe yeah stick it in my booty, yeah I like it in the arse!” I have never wished I had a hole to crawl into as bad as I did that day!

I never had one but my roommate in college did. He and his girlfriend chirped each other so they wouldn’t use minutes. One hungover morning I keep hearing it chirp and his girlfriend yelling for him to answer the phone. Went on for about two hours until I couldn’t take it anymore. Busted up in his room to wake him up and the fricker had forgotten his phone when he went to work, and I had no idea how to use it (still carrying the Nokia personal defense device (brick), so just buried it in his sock drawer to muffle the sound.

Best invention ever for Any type of LEO or First Responder. They cost a fortune so agencies dumped them.
