Me either. I know the "don't draw unless you're going to shoot" school of thought is a popular one and for 99% of people they should agree with it, but this guys got a unique situation.

It's not that I am not going to shoot. I have just been fortunate that when they saw the weapon they went to other way. If they still took off towards me it would be immediate to start squeezing off rounds. I just pray to god it never escalates that much. I don't need that courthouse drama.

On the other hand on the street not in these situations that I speak of now, just the normal cases its not coming out unless I am ready to fire it. Y'all just don't realize that in the parts of town I work the pull and shoot mentality is just too aggressive and I would be in prison. Most people not in hood aren't gonna mess with you unless they honestly intend to do harm. That is when I am pulling to draw blood.

It's just so narcissistic to think someone is out to get you. Are you a prosecutor in the Telly Hankton trial? Are you smuggling conflict diamonds? If the answer is no, you don't need a truck gun. No one wants to carjack your 2001 Chevy Silverado. The doctors and investment bankers and lawyers I know don't carry truck guns - only the redneck oilfield workers do. And you know what they do with them? They pull them out when they get drunk. I once saw a guy go out to his car in Tigerland to retrieve his Colt Python because he had been beaten up. Luckily he didn't blow anyone away.

I don't keep mine in when I go out to party. Never a good idea. I do carry because I sometimes have to work in the worst of New Orleans east, the 9th word or Gert town. It's rare, but I feel better armed out there. If anyone comes up to me while I am stopped or parked, my gun is out.

A person I knew's dad stopped in New Orleans east a few months back to look up directions to an apartment, he was robbed and killed. Not going to clean it up, but in some areas a white person in a halfway decent truck is an instant target. Cash, Credit Cards and tools and a whip.
So yes, I would advocate arming your vehicle.

Don't go pointing it around, but if someone coming to bum money from you or wash your windshield has other reasons and sees your hand on a pistol, they will back away.

I love New Orleans, but we have some hoods. I'm not willing to lose the bulk of my livelihood so I keep a gun in my truck.

re: Who carries a gun in their truck/car?
My best friend's boyfriend was involved in a road rage incident on the Westbank about a year ago. Apparently he cut someone off inadvertenly and this guy went nuts. He began following him and tailgating. They come up on a red light. My friend's boyfriend stops and the road raging a-hole gets out of his car and approaches the window. The boyfriend pointed his Sig at him and asked "Can I help you?" He said the road rager's eyes got huge, shook his head no and went back to his car.
It turned out ok, but that jackass could have tried anything if my friend's boyfriend hadn't had that gun. The gun was a deterrent, which ideally is what it should always be.

This all went down in broad daylight at like 2pm in the afternoon btw.

Like what? Punching the window out? Ever seen anyone succeed in doing that? It's nearly impossible. All that boyfriend had to do was keep his door locked and go on about his day. What if, instead of being intimidated, the other a-hole drew his own gun? As exciting as it sounds being in a gunfight, I think I'll take my chances keeping calm and driving off when the light turns green.

It's a horrible story, and my sympathies to the family. But he was killed with his own gun after his truck was broken into.

I take it that you think people should not be armed when out in public. What makes you think this?

Maybe the a-hole had his own gun, but didn't pull it out when he saw my friend's boyfriend already pointing his. I don't know. Maybe he'll think twice about approaching someone else next time he feels slighted in a traffic situation.

Oh and if he had gone to draw his own gun, the boyfriend would have already fired at him. He wasn't going to just sit there and watch him pull out a gun while his is already out and aimed at the a-hole.

It's a complicated issue for me. I have a concealed carry permit but rarely take advantage of it. The only scenario I can see needing one is going to dinner in the French Quarter with a date, but in those cases I'll be having more than 1 drink so it would be unlawful to carry (a BAC of .05 is the legal limit for carry concealed).

I don't go to neighborhoods where one requires a firearm. I can understand people that do need them in those situations. If I were a FedEx driver in the 9th Ward, I'd carry. If I had whatever fisherbm's job is I'd carry. But carrying a truck gun to protect from road rage and the occasional bum washing windshields? Naw, I can't get around on that.

re: Who carries a gun in their truck/car?
I'm a female and seriously considering getting a weapon to keep in my car. I drive home to New Orleans a lot from Dallas and it would make me feel safer knowing I had that to protect myself if I were to get stranded on the side of the highway. We already keep one in the nightstand for home protection.
I don't have children, so I don't have to worry about them finding it and I have taken classes on firearm safety.
I wish we lived in a world where a gun wasn't needed, but like another poster wrote, I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

You keep using this term. In your opinion, is there a difference between someone carrying a gun in a truck and someone carrying a gun that drives a car?

Sorry, bro. I didn't realize "The Farm Toy Capital of the World" was so dangerous. Keep your head on a swivel.

Just sounds cooler than "vehicle gun" or "glove box gun." There was an OB thread Monday titled "post your truck gun" or something thereabouts. It's not something I coined.

What about people like me who are on a motorcycle most of the time? Is a motorcycle gun different than a truck gun?

And yes, majority of the time, if I'm on my bike, I've got my pistol on me.

BTW, there is no such thing as a place where you "need" or "don't need" a gun. Furthermore, no matter where I am, I'd rather have my pistol and not need it than not have my pistol and need it.
