Our 2007 Odyssey broke down and we have to replace it with a limited budget. 4 kids under 8 - so yes it absolutely has to be a van.

Hypothetically, here are two options:

Van A
2014
155,000 miles

Van B (same make/model of Van A)
2013
115,000 miles
$1,000 less than Van A

This choice seems obvious to me, but which do you choose?

[edited to add cost]

Look for wear on brake pedal. Even though one has less mileage, it could be all city driving. If the 155,000 mile van was mostly highway miles, it will have less wear and tear on the engine, transmission, and brake system.

You can look at the front of the vehicle too. Paint chipping is usually a sign of highway driving too.

I’d look at both vehicles, and drive both before deciding. Listen to it when it’s cold and warmed up. How it shifts, does power steering whine, do belts look good, fluid look clean, etc.

You can tell a lot without even connecting a scanner, but yeah, in general lower mileage is better.

Whichever one is a Honda or Toyota. Less miles if same model.

If they show wear, I replace those when I sale. They are like $6
