Where did the African American community live in Baton Rouge in the 50's?

My dad said when he was really young ( 1950's) he lived in a house close to Plank in North Baton Rouge. He said that the area was all white and that the run down houses that are there now were built by the white community. I know things were segregated back then, so where did the black community live and what type of housing was it?

Uhhh.... what kind of conversation were y'all having that led to him giving you this information?

But to the OP, yes, North BR was a white community back then. It was alot of workers who worked at Exxon that built those houses and lived there.
I would imagine the black community as a whole did not live within the city limits back then

In the country. A little later is when black people migrated to the cities and white people moved out.

Ask your mom, she spent a lot of time there.

In the 50's and 60's downtown area and plank WAS Baton Rouge. There was no such thing as south Baton Rouge. It was all swamp and woods.

I believe the areas north of LSU and around Southern are historically black areas. Like since the 1800's or early 1900's.

Most likely in Old South Baton Rouge, the Scotlandville area, and the area around Friendship Capitol High.

Yep. My dad worked for BR Water Co after graduating from LSU. He said they had to go out to the Stumberg/Tiger Bend area and there was nothing there.

We were going to Tony's and he told me he used to live around there. Said things were segregated back then and that was a white area. Im not sure what you are getting at.

Unless the areas I just mentioned were still not incorporated at that time, this would be false.

I lived there in the 70's and it was primarily Scotlandville and North BR along Plank Road area.

I grew up in a house in North Baton Rouge right off of Plank Road too. The AAs mostly lived in Scotlandville area in the 60's back when I was a young little fart.
