Where did Labor Day come from?

Depending on the source, it was first proposed in 1882 by either Peter McGuire or Matthew Maguire to the Central Labor Union of New York, as an official workers’ holiday. McGuire was General Secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor. Matthew Maguire was a machinist and a member of the International Association of Machinists. Both were members of the same branch of the Socialist Labor Party. Regardless of who is ultimately responsible, Labor Day originated in the labor movement and was conceived of by socialists.

That happened after all the grunting and pushing that she did under me.
A card on Father's Day is all I ask for.

It's originally pronounced la bor day, a French holiday passed down from before the Louisiana purchase. It celebrated the love of food and was supposed to be basically another holiday like thanksgiving. As time went by, it was changed to Labor Day for ease of pronunciation, and to give the idea that it was originally an American holiday. It is still celebrated as a French holiday in small pockets in south Louisiana and in NYC, where pigs are roasted over an open pit dug into the ground and feasted upon, much like a luau.
