You do realize most illegal immigrants are here on expired visas right?

we are talking about the ones we can document? how can this be a "fact" if we don't know how many have snuck in?

As my example states in my previous post, yes, we checked him for small pox. But gave him a whole new identity. Is that what you want? Allowing people to receive a new identify as long as they get a physical?

I want people to come in get checked out and if they keep their names fine. I think the name changing thing you bring up is just a red herring, and probably wouldn't have happened if the kid spoke English.

And the reason for commenting on what we did 100 years ago is because people try and tell you that enforcing immigration laws is un-American and violates our traditions when it really does not.

Do you think the border with Mexico was any more secure in the late 1800s/early 1900s, when Vito came thru Ellis Island? No way.

Also note, the nativists treated all the Italian immigrants like shite, just like you treat the Messicans today.

Secure the borders. Set up strategic entry points to facilitate immigration, review of immigrants, their health, and whether or not they had a means of support.

The problem with illegals here now is an entirely separate issue as I see it, and has nothing to do with what we need to do to secure our borders.

Outside of a few exceptions, within one generation they were all basically seen as indistinguishable members of normal American society, though.

I'm not sure if this thread belongs on the Movie Board or the Poli Board

That would mean that Congress actually comes together and does their job

We can't even get families to safety that helped out US soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan and put a target on their back.

Well shite, problem solved. I'm surprised no politician has figured out that the solution is just that easy.

Seeing as you don't know shite about immigration and citizenship, I'm going to bow out of this "discussion."

You address the needs at the time. Ellis Island was built because the city of NY couldn't handle the overflow of European refugees.

Currently the overflow is from Mexico, and our govt. failed to react to the need to secure the southern border decades ago. if they had, we wouldn't have as many illegals here as we have now.

You have no idea how I treat anyone. I hire the most qualified people I can and pay them accordingly.

I see Mexican workers in my neighborhood all the time. Generally they are hard working, industrious people who want what everyone wants.

We need these people here, but we need to know who they are, and if they have a visable means of support before they come. They don't need to be hiding in the shadows afraid of big brother. They don't need to work for nothing because they are scared to get sent back.

It's bs the way they are "used" as pawns by businesses and by the respective parties.

Meh, took longer than that. Same with the Irish. Our WASPy forefathers kept their thumb on the immigrants for much longer, especially the Catholics.

Sure, there's still country clubs and a few other things one can't get in with a vowel at the end of your name, but for actual important everyday things, it really only took about one generation for most to assimilate fully. At least, I know that's the case with my family.

After WWII they got more respect due to the sacrifice made during the war. They were finally considered white
