Adjust your timeline based on her perceived quality of life... granted, she's old and can't be compared to a 3-4 y/o.. but if she is declining exponentially, it might be time to think about a new dog.

Condolences... I've never had to make that decision... All my dogs passed in their sleep

You are thinking way too much into his posts. As SS said, he's an idiot that's always late to the new edgy joke. He thinks he's clever and funny but never knows when to shut the frick up.

I talk myself out of doing it on a weekly basis... I don't want to do any dog a disservice by not being around all the time and living in an apartment.

june will make 2 months since we put claude down. one day, he just couldn't stand up. my mom called me while i was in summer school and explained that our local vet didnt know what was wrong and she was trying not to cry, but i just had that feeling that it was time.

she drove to BR and took him to LSU vet with my little brother. did the little preop stuff and they took him on this gurney to the back. we left and they called us over the next few days explaining the tests they were doing and shite. one day they called and said he wouldnt eat a goddamn thing. i grilled some chicken and threw it into a care package with cheetohs (his two favorites) and took it to the vet school, but they took it and wouldnt let me see him. called later and said he wouldnt eat it. called that sunday and said they had to put him on oxygen and that it was time

last memory i have of him was him getting wheeled off in the gurney looking back at us. one of my biggest regrets. do not do that. be there when you put him down

RIP my man

Getting a pug right?

I will be a wreck the day I have to let go of Butters. It's simply just not fair that dogs have such short lifespans.

I've posted this before....but a 6 year explained it best on why dogs have such short lifespans

"People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life--like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right? Well dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."

Had to put my lab down in july. Came home one day and he simply couldn't walk. Hardest thing I ever had to do. All I can say is the process is humane, and very peaceful. Still think about him daily.

Why is it acceptable, even expected, that you take your dog to its death? Seems messed up to me. How do we know we're acting in their best interests?

Not sure I follow. When we put our Akita down about 5 weeks ago, we knew it was time. He had quit eating and drinking water and pretty much did nothing. When we took him to the vet, the vet thought it was time as well. We didn't want him to continue to suffer.

Why do we pet owners have a right to end our animals life?

I wasn't there when they put our dog down but my wife and son was (I was at work). Being there helped both them through it; it was peaceful (my wife's words) and dignified.

I feel for you - one of the worst things - it is losing a member of the family.

Conventional wisdom is that it is better to do this a little too soon than a little too late, if that helps you make the right decision. I was a little late with my german shepherd and I regret it. I wasn't paying attention and didn't realize how bad it was. The vet was shocked that the crew was there to bring him home. We brought him back a couple of days later.

He saw 14 summers - it was a good run.
