i've had my dog for over a decade, but in the past 3 months she has contracted cancer. Doc didn't give her much time to live...6 months to a year. Currently she wheezes, drools a good bit, and generally has trouble eating and keeping food down. I am reluctant to take her in, but I feel it may be getting to the point where her quality of life is no longer worth it. How did anyone from the OT decide to put their dog down?

My dog had a tumor removed yesterday.

As long as she has an appetite, I will keep her around.

fwiw, when you start to think it might be time, you probably should have already done so...

sorry man, it is the toughest thing you will ever do, but it is one of the responsibilities that you took on as a pet owner...honestly, I wish someone could do the same for me when my time comes...

Sounds like time.... you should get some outside opinions from people that don't have any connection with the dog.

People that love the dog, as in yourself, will be selfish and want to keep the dog alive longer that she needs to be here while in pain.

The dog has been a good loyal companion so do right by her and take her to the vet and get honest opinions on what to do and take the advice. Don't allow a dog to suffer.

Good luck, sending good vibes you and the pups way god speed

My dog died over a year ago and I still dream at least once a week of him jumping on and off the bed when i'm sleeping..... Dogs are so fricking awesome.

I can't wait until i'm able to get another best friend. If humans were half as awesome as dogs, the world would be a better place.

Hope that works for your dog.

Had a 13 year old Doberman that had a couple on her breasts. After we had them removed, five or six came up. At that point she was in a lot of pain. Vet said we had to do it.

I doubt too many vets would advise putting an animal down if it weren't necessary.

Oh, man. This is tough. I still have a 100-yard stare I go into when someone mentions the last dog I had to put down. If the dog is struggling to do normal things, though, just send it to rainbow bridge or whatever. It's gonna hurt real bad, but let the dog leave with some dignity, rather than just being a pile of wheezing flesh for months.

My dog suddenly lost his ability to use his back legs. I took him to the vet they examined him and did an MRI. There was nothing that could be done.

You will know when it's time.

Just make sure you think about how you'd like to spend your remaining time together. I wish I would've given my boy a big old juicy steak that last day but everything happened so quickly and I was in denial.

A day doesn't go by that I don't think about him. It's been about 14 months or so.

Listen to the vet, when he is suffering too much, or when that light goes out of the eyes

Had to do it about a year ago with my 15 yr old lab. Tough call, but you'll know when it's time. She looked at me like help, and I knew. Vet said it was the right thing to do. Listen to them, they deal with it every day.

When he got up one morning and couldn't walk from pain. We knew it was time. Tough choice.
