When did flea markets turn exclusively into trashy cheap crap sold by carnies?

I grew up going to flea markets with my dad and cousin. Dad was always looking out for old tools and cousin was looking for anything pertaining to music.
I remember the flea markets being basically huge yard sales with some folks on the periphery selling produce, dogs, homemade furniture, etc…but that was back in the 80s and early 90s.
Last Saturday, for the first time in 20+ years, I strolled around a flea market. It was basically sh!tty Chinese stuff that even dollar stores wouldn’t bother carrying.
There honestly wasn’t anything in the entire sale that I would bother taking home even if it were free. It was terribly awkward to be dragged into conversation by the purveyors of this garbage - who were clearly living out of RVs while traveling around to these markets.
When did this become the norm?

Your memory isn't as good as you remember it.
It has always been crap sold by pikeys.

A lot of it is survivorship bias. You remember the good times and great finds, while forgetting that most of the flea markets stuff was still garbage.

There used to be a big flea market in Florida Blvd in BR that used to be solid. This was early 90s. I can remember walking around it.
I think it was Florida. I remember it looking kind of bombed out from the outside.
Pulled a Rondell White RC from a pack there. I have no idea why I remember this.

In general, they have gone either that way or the prices have soared because people know what they have (or are just dreaming).
There are still some great flea markets left in America like the Rose Bowl Flea in Pasadena but while you may find your grail it likely won't be cheap.

I am very ignorant and live in a cave
Can someone tell me the difference between a "flea market" and a "swap meet"?

In the olden days swap meets were exactly what they sounded like people swapped goods for goods generally with no cash involved. You rarely see those today but the name has stuck to some places which are now more like a flea market. Back when I was young I used to go to a car parts swap meet and pulled a (little red) wagon around with parts like carbs, intakes and maybe a set of heads looking for parts I needed.

eBay, FB Marketplace and Etsy killed those places.

I've ever been to a swap meet. I only know of them b/c Johnny Carson did around a thousand jokes about them in his monologue ("You know what's big now? These swap meets they're having..."). I guess they must have exploded in popularity in '80s Cali.

I remember when eBay was mostly used items sold like a flea market. Now it’s just Amazon Lite. Cheap China crap and sponsored sellers. I rarely ever visit the site anymore. If I’m going to buy Amazon crap. I might as well go to Amazon directly.

It's not exclusive. You can still buy meth from prison gangs.

Since they have been around.

It used to be located where BRCC is now located.
I can remember going there in the 80s with my mom.
