Just got a pair of the New Balance Fresh foam shoes and they are absolutely amazing. I was running in Brooks but these are the most comfortable shoe I've ever worn.
I tried those on today but decided to stick with the brooks ghost 6 the same type I had before.

Running shoes are a scam...

I run 2000-2,400 miles a year in $19.99 shoes from Walmart. All you need is something to protect you from sharp objects.

According to this book:
,
there's never been a study showing running shoes prevent injuries and lots of evidence they actually cause them...

I didn't believe it at first either. But I've been buying minimal shoes for going on 4 years with no ill effects...

Been going 4 miles in my vibrams but have just been at a plateau.

Now I'm looking for some that I can wear for longer runs.
Merrell road glove or new Balance Minimus with no heal to toe drop or a 4mm

What minimalist shoes does Wal Mart sell for $19.99?

Running form, habits, mileage, etc cause injuries, agreed, but saying running shoes are a scam is like saying clothes are a scam.

Sorry, I should be careful with my terminology. By "minimal" shoes, I'm not talking about the products shoe manufacturers have come out with in response to the ideas discussed in Born to Run. It's funny, because even stripped of motion control/structure and all the other high tech BS they sold for decades, the shoes are still very $$$. Instead of minimal, I should have said cheap.

And I should also have said "expensive brand name running shoes are a scam", not all running shoes.

But my main point stands.

Okay, what cheap shoes do you run in for $19.99 from wal mart?

They are as much of a scam as "expensive brand name clothes".

People who buy a shoe and thinking it is a fix or wonder solution or will transform you to a midfoot or natural runner are "victims" of marketing, but it's really no different than any clothing.

The $19.95 brand I currently have is Avia.

No, because there's no sales pitch claiming a health benefit from designer shirts or jeans. Running shoe manufacturers, on the other hand, promise to solve "problems" like over-pronation with expensive motion control features. No similar kind of claim pertains to "designer" apparel.

I am asking about what shoe, not what brand. I would like to compare it to shoes I run in for $60.
Things that matter to me like weight, breathability, drop etc.

Is it the Austin for $32? The Lynx for $29?

Here is a link to the full Avia line from their website: LINK

I think that's slightly exaggerating. I mean, I understand their marketing different shoes for numerous "runners", but I don't see these promises you are referring to.

They are not Dr Oz vouching for some miracle diet pill.

Just like you can get some "moisture wicking" socks from wal-mart, it doesn't mean swift-wicks are a scam.

Product life, weight, durability, material, etc are all add'l factors as well.

I recently got these Nike AirMax+, they're the '13 edition I believe. They come ready for the Nike+ iPod thing but I haven't decided if I want to buy one or not, they're only like $20 I believe.

Thought I'd chime in here. In my experience I do think the minimus 4mm drop shoes I switched to a few years back have helped me be more aware of my foot strike. I used to run in more heel cushioned shoes and had more of a problem with shin splints and knee pain during full and half marathon training. Since switching to the minimus, I have had fewer issues with injuries during training and races.

Now I'm not naive enough to attribute this all to the shoe, but I do think less cushioning and slowly building up using a minimal type of shoe has helped me to focus more on improved form and foot strike.

You are probably correct in that switching your foot strike has helped with your leg pain, BUT the change in your mechanics is what has helped with the pain, not the shoe.

Anything that helps you improve your form is a tool, but it isn't the shoe thats doing it, it's you.

Asics says things like "Matching a shoe's properties with the runner's running style will increase comfort, running efficiency, and contribute to decreasing the risk of injury." and some people interpret that as a promise of fast injury free running when that just isn't the case.

I agree, it's not the shoe by itself. Yet the feedback my body and legs would receive when training with a minimus shoe that helped me to make changes to my form.

I've enjoyed racing much more the past few yrs since making the switch.

Newton has hit it big with that. The immediate feedback from someone switching to a forefoot strike is a big aid in making a healthy switch.
