Van Heusen and Stafford shirts are great, cheap dress shirts. After several washes, they tend to fade more and the sleeves tatter faster than your more expensive brands, from my own experience, but they usually last me a couple of years. If they fit you right, $20 JC Penny dress shirts look just as good new as your more expensive stuff to the overwhelming majority of the people who will be looking at your shirts.

ETA- finally got up and looked. Club Room from Macy's is a really nice shirt at about the price you want to spend (or less), OP. Mine shrunk a bit after the first wash (compared to a RY Gold Label shirt). It still fit, but the collar was a little tight. I'd maybe consider bumping up a 1/2" on the collar size. Or maybe I'm just fatter than I used to be.

I don't see the point in spending a lot of money on a shirt that I might wear once a year

I work at Jos. A. Bank and our usual everyday sale on the Traveler is 1 for 55 2 for 95 or 3 for 135. The series is awesome, completely maintenance free, machine washable and wont shrink also wrinkle free. So really you would be paying under 50 for one if you buy more than one.

My go to cheap dress shirt is Alfani Slim Fit from Macy's. Under $50 and fit me great.

I only buy Brooks Brothers slim fit at the moment. I have really long arms so I can up a size over regular fitting dress shirts to get the arm length and the slim fit design makes an XL fit like a L.

Whatever it is, they need to be slim fit.

I need to do some upgrading, too.

I love Vineyard Vines prints and colors, and they have new slim fits, but I can't pull the trigger on a $100 shirt.

A lot of Brooks Brothers in here...is that just what you buy to say you have a nice shirt or is it actually a nice shirt?

I hate the way BB fits. And they're cheaply made. Not worth the price at all.

Someone is going to the outlet and buying 505's or whatever the cheapo brand is called.

They are OK. A lot of middle class bitches ITT who think BB is the end-all-be-all of class.

In reality, you should find a local tailor and have him make bespoke shirts/pants/suits. It isn't ridiculously expensive, you don't have to take a private jet to Turnbull & Asser. You can find a Korean in every town in America who will make you a fantastic shirt/pant/suit for a fair price that fits you like a glove.

I'm an engineer, I don't have to have tailored shirts. My office is fairly relaxed. It's not a blue jeans and polo shirt kind of office, it's more of a business casual. I usually wear khakis and button ups, but I want to upgrade to casual slacks and some nicer shoes.

Anyway, I was just wondering about BB. I don't have any but like Vineyard Vines $100 per shirt is a bit absurd for my purposes.

If you hit Jos A Bank at the right time, you can get some good shirts there at that price. Try the website.

That said, I may never buy a suit there again.

Twice a year Dillard's has an end of season sale. I can't give you the dates.....my wife keeps up with it. They always put nice dress slacks ( usually priced $125 and up) 70-80% off. You can steal some great looking slacks for less than what you'd pay for cheaper looking ones. Last forever. Only downside is you have to get them hemmed. Usually $7 a pop. Still, I get $175 slacks for about $40.

Vineyard Vines is for 12 year olds and frat boys. If you're not 23 anymore, you shouldn't be wearing VV with any regularity.

shite, if you're looking for cheap, go to Lands End. But I can't recommend enough going to a tailor and having 4 or 5 shirts made. It won't cost you over $300.
