What's the Rationale Behind Staying During a Major Hurricane Esp. In a Coastal Town?

I have never understood this mindset. Especially in SE Louisiana. I understand riding it out during strong tropical storms and a low grade hurricane but it's utter stupidity when you start going high 2,3,4+
This doesn't include first responders. Just typical residents.
My job makes me come back within 24 hours after storm passes but I sure as hell wouldn't stay during a storm with my family.

Some people have no good place to go, are old and stubborn, etc
Arent really thinking rationally

Some I guess don't have means
Others do it for the experience, some obligated for work.
I've rode out a couple cat 2's for work reasons, its all well and good til that power goes out

"It's never flooded before"
"We stayed for (insert storm name) and nothing happened)"
And the elderly, poor, ill ... etc
I worry about any nursing homes as I work in one but evacs come with risk as well.

Some people are just stupid.

If you evacuate you can't get a hurricane jerk.

Some people stay because it's an opportunity to loot.

Bc an evacuation party doesn't sound nearly as awesome

I've seen a lot of this over the years.
I think when a place doesn't get a major damaging storm for 40 years or longer, some just don't think it will be that bad.

People get scared of being trapped in traffic or in all honesty, don't have the patience to deal with it in an evac. Then they see this storm as a little old tropical depression and pay it no mind then when it is about to make landfall as a Cat 4, its like oh shite.

The #1 reason is most people have nowhere to go, and not enough money

Some people are better prepared to handle hurricanes. Not everybody is vulnerable to a hurricane.

After Betsy and Camille, I think this attitude went away for a while after so many died. Then we had a lull for many years plus some storms were duds. Katrina wiping away the the MS coast all the way to I-10 seemed to have cured that idea again around most of La and MS. I haven't heard of people having parties any more.

1. It's badass.
2. Protect your home from the aftermath.
3. The parties.

Yea, I think Katrina pretty much ended the idea of hurricane parties

A few years back the state was very reluctant to let people back in after the storm. I forget the hurricane, but I remember most people being interviewed saying they would never evacuate again.

This one increased in strength pretty quickly, which may have surprised some people.
Others may have underestimated the danger they were in, and decided to stay at home or at work.
Then there are some that either can't easily evacuate or can't afford to leave.

well part of it is, if you have nothing, but what you have is just what is in your home, and you have no money to replace anything lost or looted after the storm, then why leave it?
some people make a rational decision that they simply cant afford to lose everything to looters after the storm so the risk of staying just so they can be there to protect their home is worth it.
the stupid police will always refuse to allow anyone who leaves, to be able to go back home until some politician decides its ok and has taken a publicity stunt photo opt first to declare it "safe" and allow people to go home to clean up and protect whats left after the storm for sometimes 2-3 weeks waiting for power and emergency services to be restored before they let people go home.
all the while your house is undamaged from the storm but because police wont let you go home the local low life scum who stayed just for the prime looting opportunities are going house to house kicking doors in stripping houses of everything not nailed down. i actually had to help some go home by boat because that was the only way around the police barricades.
yes its smart to leave and "things" can be replaced "if" you have a job or income, but if your life savings is your home, and whats in it, then i cant fault anyone for staying and protecting what they cant afford to lose. i dont think its smart, but its a choice they have the right to decide what is more important, staying safe and not caring if they lose everything to looters, or risk the danger of staying and know they have a house and belongings intact after the storm, or go with them if the storm takes it all.
i view it as a form of asking to die if they have to start over living in a ditch or on the street with nothing and beg for a dollar on the street just to survive.
a lot fewer people would stay behind and risk dying if the cops wouldnt stand in your way and help looters take everything you own in the name of declaring it "safe" first. if i am willing to risk it and the road isnt under water or missing, then move the frickin barricades and get out of my way so i can go protect my home.
